There's something about disaster and adversity that activates a certain gene in our British psyche - I can't characterise it exactly, but it combines obstinacy, black humour and a willingness to talk to strangers which we normally wouldn't dream of doing.

A good example was when the destroyer HMS Sheffield was hit by an Argentinian Exocet missile during the 1982 Falklands war - the crew gathered on the quarterdeck waiting to be evacuated and sang "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life"

There was also the army unit in Northern Island that adopted a stray dog and named it "Semtex"

I'm normally someone who has a very good command of English, but I find that a lot of my glibness has deserted me today.

I find that gene so very (searching desperately for the right words and not finding it) admirable. Americans just whine, moan, complain-- while looking up the GPS coordinates for airstrikes.
