Superhero Occupations

Hey, I'm looking for suggestions for a book I'm trying to write. I'm inventing a superhero (pretty generic superhero) and I need an occupation for him to do in his normal person persona ( Read more... )

The thing about superheroes is that there are thousands and thousands of them out there. Name a job or power, and it's a fairly safe bet that someone's got it ( ... )

Lawyer? Professor or teacher? Actor? Store or restaurant manager? Close to a policeman, but what about a private eye? Lab technician, mechanic ...

I always though a late-night radio DJ would be fun, unless that's too much like a reporter. He puts on a ten-minute-long track and you know there must be a house fire somewhere!

I like the idea of a college professor ... I think that's what the writers of the first S5 episode had the future CK (L&C's however many greats-grandson) be. It also makes me think of Indiana Jones or the Da Vinci Code. :) He'd have to skip out on meetings or occasionally cancel class early if he had to dash out, but he's not expected to be in the classroom for long stretches at a time, like a regular teacher would be.

A private eye would be cool, too, or maybe a bondsman? It could be conflict of interest -- he catches them, then helps them post bail *g* -- but it could be a neat layer of characterization depth.

Or maybe he's a small business owner ... he has a small, loyal staff that he depends on (there could even be a potential love-interest among them, if you are going that route), but he often has to dash out to "make the bank deposit" or "check the inventory order" in the middle of the day, which leaves them rolling their eyes at his inability to focus.

What about someone who works for a large advertising corporation making up jingles for commercials or those (stupid) poems they put on tissue boxes sometimes... he could easily escape and claim to be looking for inspiration or something, and he likely wouldn't get tied up in meetings that much.
Or, the mad scientist type is always typecast as a crazed evil lunatic, but what if he was a very smart one that just acts like he doesn't 'get' social interactions, so was prone to come in late or wander out of the room or run screaming 'Eureka!' down the hall.
Or, I'm a fan of the college professor idea too- especially one of philosophy or psychology, where they tend to just dodder out of the room randomly anyway (at least they tend to here (: )
I didn't know you wrote (or Andy might have told me and it slipped my mind)- I'd like to read something of yours, if I could :)

Wow, thanks for everybody's suggestions! You've given me lots of directions to look in! You're right, pgwfolc, I'm not thrilled with emergency services because I want my hero to be able to be super at rescues, not be stuck in his normal job persona ( ... )
