a day without immigrants

Ok, so right now I am trying to get streaming ABC shows on my computer, but this building is still on dial-up. Hopeless. Sort of like the suicidal book on tape. I seem to be a patron of hopeless entertainment causes ( Read more... )

about this whole immigrant thing: i am in all honesty not as well educated on it as i should/ would like to be. yesterday, however i spend almost the entire afternoon taking care of the necessary paperwork to study in canada. let me just say that there is a lot of it (and as far as immigration/ residency things go for an american to study in canada is about an un-complicated as it gets--i know that there is considerably more to legally immigrate to the united states). in addition, with all the different processing fees it is going to cost almost $300. i don't know. i understand that it is important to know that people immigrating to your country are who they say they are, and that they are not criminals and that they do not have tuberculosis, but it just seems like it would be almost impossible for a family with limited resources to make it work.

I think it's fair to say that it IS impossible for a family with limited resources to make it work... "Legally". So it's interesting (ahem!) that our government is working to make that even more difficult and cost-time-energy-prohibitive.
It's an interesting question, isn't it, to think about the value of immigration in our society? I think if the current administration had its way, we'd erect a Berlin-esque wall along the Mexican border.
In the town where I lived during college, immigration was a lot more than theoretical. There's an extremely large population of Mexican and Central American immigrants. And if they all decided to strike on Monday? It would have shut down the town of Emporia... That population provides some amazing and valuable contributions to society, legal or illegal.
I guess you could say I'm sick of this "us" (REAL americans) vs. "them" (the evil foreign unappealing invaders) mentality. It doesn't seem that black and white to me.
