I often just gloss over the gaming aspects and start describing it as large group improvisational theater where everyone participates and there is no audience.
Anyone with any theater background from school, that has ever been to a "how to host a murder mystery" event, or gone to one of those dinner theaters where the actors mill around the audience and interact with them will find that kind of description easier to latch onto.
