Summary: There’s a new doctor at the hospital, and Jonghyun thinks he sounds too good to be true.
After jamming all of his belongings into a locker, Jonghyun rushed into the nurse’s station. He was running a tad bit behind schedule, as he couldn’t, for the life of him, find the blue scrubs that he wanted to wear this morning. It had led to a series of delays that left him a bit discombobulated. However, after he stepped through the threshold of the lounge, he quickly got into the swing of things. There were orders to be filled and patients to be seen, as there was everyday at Asan Medical Center.
Being a nurse was something that Jonghyun was passionate about. Despite the negative criticism from his family and no-longer-relevant friends, he was happy to pursue his goal in life. It hadn’t been easy, especially with his father’s constant berating, but Jonghyun felt content to work in his chosen profession.
“No, I don’t want to be a doctor,” Jonghyun had assured people over and over.
“Is it because you’re gay? Do you want to be a stereotype?” His father had questioned. Unfortunately, in the older man’s eyes, Jonghyun’s choices were in direct correlation to his sexual preferences instead of from his innate nature.
That had been the last time that Jonghyun had spoken to his father about it, or anything really, and he was all the more happy for it. During college, with the support of his mother and older sister, Jonghyun had excelled at the nursing program, as well as found a new family in his friends and classmates. That support system was what made dealing with the politics of the largest hospital in Seoul a lot less difficult than it could been.
Though, several years of experience under his belt definitely helped too.
“The new attending started today,” Sooyoung said excitedly as soon as Jonghyun sat down in front of a computer. He had to check new admittance records as well as his assignments, as the hospital’s inpatients were ever changing. “Fresh out of residency, I hear.”
“Oh?” Jonghyun hummed with very little interest.
“And he is so freaking hot!” She continued, despite Jonghyun’s lack of prompting.
Chuckling, Jonghyun shook his head. It wasn’t the first time an attractive doctor stirred up the attention of the nurses. “Hotter than Dr. Jung?”
“Maybe not hotter,” the woman contemplated. “But hot in a different way!”
“Oh my God, Sooyoung,” Jonghyun laughed. He was amused by her interest, but he had too much work this morning to worry about a new doctor that they would undoubtedly have to train. New doctors, in particular, were hard to break in, with their preconceived notions about what nurses were there for. Often times these doctors, full of pride fueled by their status, were condescending and rude even with their lack of experience.
The rest of Jonghyun’s morning was filled with looking in on patients, following up with doctors, and hearing all about the handsome new doctor that was charming every single person who he came into contact with. It didn’t matter where Jonghyun went, someone was always talking about the fabulous Dr. Kim. Doctors, nurses, staff, and patients all had good things to say about the man so far.
At the nurse’s station, Sooyoung, Tiffany, and Yoona were all smiles and compliments about the doctor. They gushed about how polite Dr. Kim had been, and how he’d already mentioned more than once that healthcare was a cooperative effort by doctors and nurses. Sometimes, even the most experienced of doctors had a hard time admitting that, so it was refreshing to hear. One of them praised the fact that he’d gotten to know some of the patients on his rounds already, learning names and patient histories as fast as he could. They talked about how big his hands were and how his gorgeous eyes glimmered.
“No, but Jonghyun, he has the perfect pouty pink lips!” Tiffany assured.
“I seriously doubt it,” Jonghyun scoffed. By some miracle, Jonghyun had eluded the famed doctor, but he couldn't believe that anyone could actually live up to the image that people had constructed for him.
“You’re just saying that because you haven’t met him,” Yoona argued. “He hasn’t once asked me to fetch him something.”
“Its almost like he’s a decent human being!” Jonghyun giggled, but knew that the woman had a point.
“Not like Dr. Kang who literally cannot do anything himself,” Sooyoung chimed in.
“It’s only his first day, I’m sure that he’s just trying to make a good impression!” Jonghyun said truthfully. Sometimes they got excited about new staff members, only to be disappointed. His nurse coworkers especially.
“You hush!” Tiffany shushed. “Let us be in love with him a few more days! Did you know, he got 239 to crack a smile earlier?”
Now that surprised Jonghyun. Mr. Lee in room 239 was a recurring patient, due to a chronic illness that had a plethora of side effects, and he was in a near constant bad mood. Jonghyun was one of the only staff members that the man even allowed into the room, so the fact that Dr. Kim had gotten a smile was big. With a prickly personality, Mr. Lee disliked most people, so Jonghyun was particularly proud of the fact that he’d held multiple conversations with the man. Once, while Jonghyun had been musing on the merits of dimples and high cheekbones, he’d actually gotten a smirk.
But a smile, that was next to impossible. Sooyoung swore up and down that she’d gotten one after a botched dye job had turned her hair pink, but no one believed her.
During his lunch break, Jonghyun called his best friend to complain about this mysterious doctor who was no where to be found. Taemin had laughed loudly into the phone before hanging up on him abruptly. It was too like Taemin for Jonghyun to be bothered by it, but a budding curiosity began to rise under Jonghyun’s skin. He really did want to meet this great doctor who seemed to be taking the hospital by storm.
Probably because of his admitted interest, the universe conspired against Jonghyun and with only fifteen minutes left of his shift, he’d yet to catch sight of Dr. Kim. It was funny that after an entire shift, everyone else in the hospital that Jonghyun interacted with had met the man and become enamored with him. The more people talked about him, the more frustrated that Jonghyun got, because he too wanted to be in on it. The drop that spilled the proverbial glass of Jonghyun’s sanity was when Jonghyun did his last check on Mr. Lee.
“You heard about that new doctor?” Mr. Lee questioned gruffly. It was a testament to the new doctor that Mr. Lee had actually struck up a conversation with Jonghyun, and not the other way around.
Instead of letting his mouth hang open in surprise, how he honestly wanted to, Jonghyun responded with a nod. “I’ve been told that he’s pretty great, but I’ve yet to meet him.”
“That’s too bad,” Mr. Lee replied. “Good kid.”
“What?” Jonghyun gasped. He’d been working his butt off to make sure that Mr. Lee had everything he needed and he never asked for any praise or even recognition, but this doctor, after a single day, had Mr. Lee giving him a compliment? This was too much.
“He’s a good kid that one,” Mr. Lee answered shamelessly. Jonghyun was pretty sure that his eyes were going to pop out of his head with how wide they’d opened and the elderly man’s statement. “You know, he kinda reminds me of that time…”
Jonghyun stepped forward toward the machines that monitored Mr. Lee’s vitals and took notes in his chart, waiting for Mr. Lee to finish his statement. “That time what, Mr. Lee?”
“That time you were mentioning cheekbones and dimples,” Mr. Lee concluded. Jonghyun looked at the bed-ridden man and smiled, at least he’d remembered their conversation, despite having been years ago. It had actually been around the time that he and-- “Maybe you should ask him out.” Mr. Lee said, interrupting Jonghyun’s thought.
“Oh,” Jonghyun said, sure there was a blush creeping up his neck. “Actually I have a--”
“Terrible habit of never making the first move,” a clear deep voice said from behind Jonghyun. He instantly recognized the voice and spun around to confirm his suspicions. “I had to ask him out and to move in with me!
“Kibum!” Jonghyun said at the same time that Mr. Lee huffed out “Dr. Kim.”
“What?” Jonghyun questioned, utterly confused by the entire situation. His boyfriend walked into Mr. Lee’s room with a huge smile on his face, showing off the sharp cheekbones and gorgeous dimples that Jonghyun had fallen in love with time and time again. “How are you here?”
Mr. Lee was chuckling now, sharing a conspirational wink with Kibum above Jonghyun’s shoulder, when he turned around to take in the rare sight. Jonghyun turned back to face his boyfriend, who was still grinning widely.
“Well, that’s kind of funny story,” Kibum said, laughing now. “But, uh, long story short, I interviewed last month, right before my residency was up.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Jonghyun asked, bringing a hand up to push against Kibum’s chest. “I thought you were still looking for a position!”
“I wanted to, but I thought it’d be kind of a fun surprise!” Kibum reasoned, scratching at the back of his neck sheepishly. “Taemin and Jinki said it would be.”
“Babe, you are so ridiculous,” Jonghyun said, finally relaxing a bit. Of course Kibum was the new Dr. Kim. It made perfect sense that his boyfriend was excellent with the nurses, after years of hearing Jonghyun complain about the unfair treatment of nurses by doctors. “And you made Mr. Lee laugh?”
“Well, I just told him about my plan to surprise my loving boyfriend,” Kibum explained, nodding to the clearly entertained man. “He told me that you’d talked about me before, and that I was probably in the clear. You’re not mad, are you?”
“Of course not! You’re finally getting paid,” Jonghyun joked. He stepped up to his boyfriend and tilted his head up, requesting a kiss. Just as Kibum was leaning down to press a kiss onto Jonghyun’s puckered lips, Mr. Lee cleared his throat loudly.
“Lets have none of that, now,” he coughed. “I still need my pill!”
Both Kibum and Jonghyun laughed, but they finished off Mr. Lee’s last evaluation for the day. As soon as they were done, the two of them scampered off to the staff lounge, Kibum pushing Jonghyun against the lockers to kiss him fiercely as soon as they saw that they were alone.
“God, I’ve wanted to do that all day,” Kibum admitted, pulling back from the kiss to take a breath.
“You should have come found me,” Jonghyun murmured against Kibum’s lips. “I’d been hearing about this wonderful Dr. Kim all day.”
“Well here you have me,” Kibum said, closing the small gap between their lips. He had no qualms with coaxing Jonghyun’s mouth open with slow swipes of his tongue, licking into his mouth with practiced ease. Jonghyun curled his arms around Kibum’s neck, losing himself in the soft and wet of his boyfriend’s mouth, completely enthralled by the day’s developments. Their lips pulled apart slowly, still holding each other close.
“I’m so glad you’re here,” Jonghyun said softly, grinning up his Dr. Kim. “We get to be together all day.”
“You’re really not bothered by it, then?” Kibum asked, his hands trailing down to Jonghyun’s small butt. “You won’t mind working together?”
“Hmm,” Jonghyun moaned. “I don’t think I’ll mind, especially if we can take our breaks together.”
Kibum slotted a thigh between Jonghyun’s legs, pulling the shorter man closer by the grip on his ass and kissing him again. Jonghyun was so deliriously happy about his partner’s secure position in the hospital, about everyone on the staff loving him already, about how much better their lives would get with the added income, that he couldn’t help but mewl against Kibum’s lips.
“Kim Jonghyun!” Someone screeched loudly. Dazed from the kiss, Jonghyun turned to see Sooyoung and Tiffany watching them with twin looks of surprise.
“I told you to let us love him a few more days!” Tiffany cried out.
Jonghyun and Kibum laughed at the indignant remark; it was going to be great working together.
