Mama Dips in Chapel Hill is the kind of southern food that I grew up with. I can't remember if you're a vegetarian. If so be careful at Dips because there is meat in the most the veggies. Also it's cheaper than Watts or Southern Rail.
Southern Rail is not Southern. Crooks is Southern nouveau cuisine.
Also mid-priced - Flavor of New Orleans in Durham. They have weird hours. And you need to be comfortable being the only caucasians in the place from time to time. But this is non-nouveau southern food and lots of seafood.
Oh and both Dips and Flavor of New Orleans are restaurants owned by African American women who learned to cook from their mamas. Not owned by people who learned to cook in restaurants or schools.
Lantern, which we can't afford (thank you dad) reminds me of the 2 restaurants in St. Paul I mentioned -- not the Asian part as how the food is prepared -- with a light touch, I guess.
Well, I'm sick with ear infections now, so frankly I'm glad to wait a few days!
Besides my dad comes tonight for two weeks, so then I don't have to worry about cobbling together childcare when #3 decides to arrive. (We had no warning with #2, he decided to come and boom, 1.5 hours later he was here -- too fast for my liking, but as I recall E-boy was slow and then lightening fast.)
My dad's been awesome. He cleans the kitchen after every meal and takes us out to lunch. How decadent is that? Today we went for our first walk together. Ella liked the stroller, but tired of it and I "slung" her the rest of the way.

So Southern Rail isn't Southern? I swear I read somewhere that it is -- newspaper or online.
As for the caucasian part, that isn't a problem as my family is mixed to some extent.

I'm staying out of the pool until I can breathe again. My sinuses and ears are killing me.
