Soju and Sake;

I want your drama
The touch of your hand
I want your leather-studded kiss in the sand
I want your love
- Lady Gaga, Bad Romance

*

Keita could remember every detail of their first meeting. He was watching Jaejoong from across the room, curious about the man’s infamous charm when Jaejoong suddenly turned to look at him and smiled from behind his wine glass. Keita was floored.

And the night only got better.

They went to a karaoke bar and sang countless songs - none were w-inds’ or Tohoshinki’s. Jaejoong laughed a lot, cracking nonsensical jokes and mixing bits of Korean with his still stumbling Japanese to Keita’s amusement. He then proposed a bet on who got drunk first, confident that he’ll get the crown but an hour later, he was the one sprawled half off the couch and half on Keita’s thighs. He tossed and turned like he was in heat; before making soft, incoherent noises at the back of his throat and nuzzling his nose onto Keita’s stomach, sighing contentedly. Keita held his new friend and threaded careful fingers through Jaejoong’s hair, and realized with a lump lodged in his throat that he was much too sober for this.

A discreet kiss to his fingers transferred to Jaejoong’s cold lips became his biggest, most precious secret.

They went on a drive in Keita’s convertible one night and Jaejoong talked all the way from Shinjuku to Tokyo Bay. They laughed when the wind slapped their face as they cruised along Rainbow Bridge, stopping by the roadside for a while to let Jaejoong soaked up Tokyo’s midnight. Keita leaned against his black Mercedes and stared at the expanse of Jaejoong’s back. The man’s gotten thinner - and it’s nearly end of October so it was getting really cold and Keita was worried Jaejoong couldn’t take the press of stress as well this time around. He was much too fragile, Keita mused, years of slaving himself wearing him thin and brittle around the edges. It was a struggle all too familiar. Keita couldn’t even bring himself to reach for Jaejoong in case he shatters in his hands.

It didn’t stop him from doing, wanting, needing.

*

Jaejoong’s group won various awards on Korean stages that winter and Keita bit his lips watching Jaejoong smiled to someone else; his expressive eyes full of love, pride, adoration. A hug that should mean nothing to him turned into a potent poison. Thank God he wasn’t there when it happened - he didn’t know what he would do if he was.

The next time they met, Keita was the one on the stage and Jaejoong was among the fans, cheering for him. It was the first time Keita had ever sang and wanted so desperately for someone to notice how good and talented he was. When Jaejoong congratulated him after the show with a pat on the back and a sweet smile, Keita knew there was no turning back. His heart was already lost in the crowd.

One meeting, two outings, ten supposed dates. Keita’s number was on Jaejoong’s speed dial - in key 5 to replace someone who used to be there.

They held hand and said nothing when they went up Tokyo Tower. Jaejoong covered his tear-swollen eyes with sunglasses and tried to smile, making a candid remark to a stranger who helped them took a picture that they were a couple. Keita’s heart bled. They watched the moon and stars through the telescope as if nothing’s wrong but he knew better, knew Jaejoong was hiding disappointment behind the fake smile stretched on his lips.

All Keita wanted to do was to kiss it better.

*

A phone call made on a humid night in July started with Jaejoong’s angry rant and ended with his pleading sobs. They were an ocean away - and Keita wished so hard then he had wings so he could fly to Seoul and embraced his friend. It was getting tougher; and Keita knew Jaejoong’s going to break soon. It was only time that was giving him mercy.

The calls got longer. Keita didn’t even have to ask Jaejoong where the other Tohoshinki members were because Jaejoong was alone and he didn’t want to talk about anyone else. He listened patiently to Jaejoong telling him stories about growing up and rebelling against his parents, about school and wanting to go to college. The ex-girlfriends (and someone he couldn’t mention) that he used to love and the heartbreaks that gave him ideas for love songs. Jaejoong had dreams that will never get fulfilled, and Keita felt more regret about it than he knew Jaejoong ever would.

The night he woke up sweating and crying out Jaejoong’s name, he knew he had fallen too deeply to get out of love.

*

He wasn’t even surprised when the news came out - he knew about it before the rest of the world did anyways. Jaejoong didn’t mention why and how, he just said he wanted a friend to hold him and Keita willingly complied. They moved on a bed too narrow for two grown men, the cotton sheet tangling around their feet when they rocked against one another. The next morning, Keita woke up with no Jaejoong beside him and an apology note on the pillow that smelled of Jaejoong’s CK One.

He never cried as hard as he did that day.

*

Jaejoong eventually came back, bearing an empty soul and a missing heart. He looked forlorn and totally worn; loneliness and desperation his second skin.

“I think I lost my heart a year ago,” Jaejoong had said.

“It’s what happened when you broke up with someone. It’s going to hurt,” Keita then replied, looking away.

One step, two steps, ten.

“You took it from him and kept it. You made me like this. I can’t sleep, I can’t eat, I can’t do anything…all I can think about is you. Keita-san, I want my heart back…please,” Jaejoong accused and pleaded at the same time, their bodies only few inches apart.

Their gaze met and Keita saw his reflection in Jaejoong’s eyes. He knew, Jaejoong knew.

“No. I’ll give you mine instead.”

When Jaejoong laughed, cried and hugged him tight, it was without pretense and heartache. It was full of hope.
