AUGH! That's crazy and I'm so sorry she had to go through that and OMG I'd be terrified (and while I've ridden the train with crazy people [in Chicago], their crazy has never been directed AT me - though I was still a bit nervous).
I like to wear headphones when on the bus/train to deter talking/conversing. I don't actually have the music on, though, so that I can hear what's going on around me so that I don't end up in some sort of situation.
Dude in the reply smackdown totally misses the point on more than one level, for sure. The reader is sending "I'm reading, don't bother me" vibes, and you interrupted, so you get a not super-duper polite response back. It's not her fault that you didn't think about that first - you did what YOU wanted, without thinking about what she might want. She's just pretty and you wanted to talk to her. Would these men have talked to dudes reading books the same way? I doubt it. I doubt they'd even THINK to ask them "what are you reading". RAWR
