This story just gives me chills. I can see Uther doing this ... no, I can hear his voice without seeing him, which makes the whole thing even creepier. Shaving with a blade like that is such an intimate experience with someone trusted, and you do such a great job setting up the discomfort of it even in the best of circumstances. But the thought of that power so directly in Uther's hands, in descriptions like this -- Merlin didn't flinch, didn't dare so much to blink as five points of ice placed pressure on his jaw, tilting the angle of his head. The blade touched his skin once more, kissed it, really, the assured kiss of a lover rolling like water confidently over his skin. -- you suck me right into Merlin's terror!

And then, you've got protective!Arthur which, sorry, is my sappy, happy trope. Nobody hurts his Merlin! But lest I feel comforted in any way by this happy scene, there's Uther watching over it all. It's such shivery goodness, the stuff horror's made of, and I love it!

I *know* - which just makes me twitch even more visualizing it in my head....and I think Uther knew that as well and used it to his advantage...

And dude - totally with you on the protective!Arthur thing. I don't like possessive!Arthur so much, but just a little gleam of protective totally makes me go all aflutter.

Is it odd that I kept flashing to Sweeney Todd as I read this? Also, I don't think a single muscle in my neck or shoulders unclenched from the time Uther spoke til he left. And even then, I was still tense. I absolutely adore the story, but holy crackers!, that tension nearly killed me!

I'm impressed (and intrigued) constantly that Merlin doesn't off Uther period! He killed Nimueh for less, really.
