Just when I thought this week couldn't get any worse...

...I hear the news about John Peel.

Gutted.

I feel like I've lost a long lost wise uncle or something. The world is a slightly worse place than it was when I got up this morning.

John Peel .. RIP

A man that gave so much to alternative music in the long years championing bands no-one else would ever push ...

A very sad loss

I know, I'm absolutely shocked. One starts to feel old when the icons one has grown up with start dying :/

I just can't help worrying about how his wife is managing this so far away from the rest of the family.

That would be an insult to his memory! My one optimistic braincell is saying that it won't be allowed to happen and even Radio 1, such as it is, will find someone to carry on where he left off. I hope.

Radio One losses its last worthwhile DJ.
I heard Billy Bragg paying tribute to JP on BBC 6music. Like so many musicians, he acknowledges that he owes his career to John. He said that is was testament to John's influence that BBC 6music exists. And certainly it's individual DJs wouldn't have their eclectic tastes without him. No one can replace John, and it'll whole radio station like 6music to continue his legacy.
Also Don Letts spoke of how John brought the underground music out into the light. Glam, Punk, Goth, Synth, and Hip-hop all were first played by John.
We, who love music, owe him so much.

That's got me in tears again :/

People keep saying "I can't understand why I'm crying over someone I never met and never knew personally", but not only has the world lost someone who by all accounts was A Decent Human Being, my generation and at least one each side of it has lost what he represented. Inspiration. Hope. A true alternative.

John Peel is truly irreplaceable.

Today's Metro headline was 'The day the music died' and I think that about sums up what I am feeling at the moment.

That line went through my head a few times, though I think hirez's 'Radio Silence' is better.
