Controversial Religious Opinion.

Sep 02, 2002 19:07

A few weeks ago, one of my closest friends told me that I was a contributory factor in his continued atheism. An interventionist god, he reasoned, would not allow shit things to persistently happen to me, being as I am, apparently, nice and fluffy and mostly harmless. My counter theory, ever so slightly tongue in cheek, was that it was because of ( Read more... )

I dare say the Christians look out at the comings and goings of the Wendyhouse and think the same thing, "They could be classified into 3 groups....." :)Yeah, but whether our hair is black and shiny or flourescent wool; whether we dress in PVC or rubber or combat trousers; whatever we listen to, we're all going to hell ( ... )

I really agree with most of this, apart from the part about govts being more than able to control the masses. I don't necessarily feel that they control people that much, I do think that people are sated enough not to wish to rebel, which is a different thing.

Yeah, in a way the world is less exciting the more we know. Then again, the way physics is going, who knows, things could get very exciting indeed. Esp as we learn more about para physical and psychological phenomena. Though I have to admit, it's kinda sad to learn there aren't really any fairies and little dragons at the bottom of the garden.

Possibly why people see so many of them, because they want to so badly. Every log that floats into Loch Ness immediately becomes a monster, why? Becuase we would love to find something like that? On the other hand...science is currently trying to implant an elephant egg with mamouth DNA.

Can't remember the who was responsible for the quote either, sorry. They almost had a point, but opiates are a lot more fun... 'Religion is the anadin of the masses' doesn't quite have the same ring to it.

I think that the point of religion (most often but not always christianity) being a nice convenient way for people to avoid the sort of self examination that would lead them to a set of personal beliefs/moral values.

I agree with you up to a point, its exactly what I meant describing the second group. But anyone who finds any kind of religion as a result of self examination and introspection I still respect, even if I disagree with the conclusions they reach.

Personally I believe in myself and my own abilities and personal codes. But rather like being self-employed and riding the economic ebbs and flows without the protection of some big corporate body, that kind of way of life leaves you without a buffer zone. I'm not criticising you; I live by the same standard, but sometimes I just think it would be nice not to have to fill in ( ... )

I actualy do know a "Born again" evangelistic type who was actuly in the best mental high point she had been for many years when she "found god". I think to be honest it was the music that did it for her. She loves to sing (Is currently trying to make a carreer of it) and of all music gospel is her favorite kind (For the sake of singing I can understand that). What I think may also have contributed was that she has never had that many freinds since she came to the UK (She's from Italy). As with any "Minority group" where there's a certain amount of shared philosophy Large numbers of shallow but powerful freindships can be made (Goth ferindships are all of course a greate deal deeper and more meaningful;).

In the end I would say don't choose a religion for any reason other than that you truly belive in it. Find your freinds and you emotional crutches elsewhere just incase you ever do find there is something you belive in.

Out of curiosity, was there a specific reason for her mental high? If not, I guess there is always one exception to prove the rule, isn't there.

Amen to that, as it were...

I think It was just a case of haveing done something she intended to do and finally having a peice of paper saying she was a qualified singer and actor.
This seems to mean a massive amount to her. She never belived she was worthy of singing infront of people until she had that despite the fact that the few people who had been lucky enough to hear her knew damn well she was very tallented.

Thank you all for your thoughts, to which I intend to respond individually. This is just because I am unlikely to get time to get to them all this evening.
