Ok, so, I've been reading this feed called Fangirls Attack which collects together blog posts about comics, mostly about the female gender in comics. My reaction to the posts varies. Sometimes they are funny, sometimes shocking, sometimes just plain exasperating. I'm not trying to put down feminism but some people take things waaaaaay too seriously. Yes, Power Girl has huge tits. She always has.. Ok, Star Sapphire's new outfit is ridiculously but I mostly feel this way because well, she had an awesome costume that really didn't need any changes. And all that about girls being this "perfect unrealistic/unattainable shape" in comics. Well, people like pretty things. I'm sorry but I'm more likely to buy a comic book with a pretty character on it than one with an ugly character. Heck, I'm more likely to buy comics with a female character than one that's just guys. Am I an asshole? Maybe yes, sue me! After a while though it gets really irritating to see these posts about "Is this comic book cover sexist?". This one particular post was so exasperating. Ms Marvel is holding Iron Man's helmet under one arm, there's a montage behind her that includes a bunch of robot soldiers. The poster was asking if it was sexist b/c of the helmet's position and direction was suggestive since it was near her crotch. Oh jesus, get a life people!
On the other side of the coin, we've got attitudes like Dave Sim's. I was trying to read his blog last night and above every day's entry he had this "Fifteen Impossible Things to Believe Before Breakfast That Make You a Good Feminist" above every single entry he makes. Just in case you missed it last time. I'm try really hard to forget his opinions of chicks (since I am one and all that) and just enjoy his work as a comic book creator but scrolling past that venom after every post of his is kinda depressing.
Hrm, I was trying to turn this into a cohesive post about something but I've kinda failed. I'm just wondering if it's that hard for people to forget gender politics and stuff and just enjoy the medium for what it is. Entertainment.
That being said, here's a couple of funny posts from that Fangirls Attack feed:
