After the rain

It was pouring outside. The rain was soaking Kame, who was walking aimlessly through the city. He felt incredibly sad. He hadn't heard from Jin in two years. Didn't he promise they'd start a new story together? Or was it a lie? Kame did not know anymore. When Jin promised, he probably had already decided that he wouldn't call or write to Kame. It was all fake hope, so Kame could live peacefully, thinking that Jin would call him, or maybe he'd write a letter. Maybe it didn't happen today, but it could happen tomorrow. That was how Kame's days passed. He kept waiting for a phone call or a letter, but he didn't receive anything, only frustration and thoughts that maybe something had happened to Jin, maybe he'd had an accident or maybe... He even died.

And, now, there was Kame. In a new city, walking aimlessly, not knowing where to go and not wanting to go back to the hotel.

He walked with his head down, not wanting to see any of the people who passed by him. Their looks bothered him. They were probably asking themselves 'what is this man doing, walking without an umbrella on this rain'. Who would've thought that he was the used-to-be-famous K of KAT-TUN? He didn't look like it. He looked more like a poor man with no home.

As Kame kept walking, he heard a voice whispering his name.

“Kame?”

He recognized it instantly. That soft voice could only belong to one person. Kame raised his head and looked at the person in front of him.

“Jin.” he whispered.

Indeed, Jin was standing in front of him with an umbrella in his hand. He looked worried. Because of me? Jin approached Kame, covering him with his umbrella.

“Kame! You're soaked! What are you doing here anyway?”

The younger man didn't answer. Even he didn't know what he was doing there or what he was looking for.

“Never mind. Let's go to my place.”

“You live here, now?” Kame asked, surprised.

“Yeah, I came back from the U.S.A., a few months ago.”

The younger man noticed the guilt in the other's voice. He was back. Since a few months ago and he didn't give the slightest hint to Kame about it in all this time. Why didn't he?

Jin grabbed Kame's arm, pulling him closer, and they walked together through the rain. Kame felt comfortable next to him, he'd missed his warmth and his smell.

They reached a small building. Kame was surprised. He'd expected Jin to live in a more fancy place. Jin closed the umbrella as they entered the building. They took the elevator to the fourth floor, which was also the last one, and then they entered Jin's apartment. It was small and clean. Again, Kame was surprised, Jin had never been a clean person. In fact, he hated cleaning. Whenever they had to, he started whining about how he didn't want to. He used to be a lazy person.

I guess he has changed - Kame thought.

Jin led Kame to his bedroom.

“Sit.” he ordered and pointed to the bed. Kame did as he had been told.

For a second, Jin disappeared behind a door, Kame only had the time to take a quick sight of the room which was also really clean. Kame could swear this wasn't the Jin he used to know. The older man came back with a towel in his hand. He threw it to Kame and he then opened the closet and took out some clothes, which he left on the bed.

“You should get changed.” he said to Kame.

The younger man nodded and Jin left the room.

Kame glanced around him for the second time. He noticed a picture frame on the shelf, next to the bed. The photo in it looked like the one they took 3 years ago on their anniversary. Kame walked up to it and took a closer look. It really was that picture. They both looked so happy and careless. Who would've thought that 2 weeks later, Jin would leave. Perhaps Jin had already taken that decision, before that day, but he didn't look like it. He looked as happy as usual, with that big smile on his face, which made Kame's heart skip a beat.

Kame changed into Jin's clothes, inhaling their smell. He felt like he really was in Jin's arms.

He stepped out of the room. He saw Jin sitting on the sofa, with two cups of tea in front of him. Kame walked to him and he sat down on the sofa. Jin remained silent.

“What's wrong?” Kame asked shyly.

Jin didn't look at him, but he answered.

“Nothing.” he said.

Now, Kame knew that there was something wrong, and surprisingly, he knew what it was. Or at least he thought he did, without being absolutely sure.

“Jin, it's okay.”

The older man turned his face around and looked at him. Kame could read the surprise on it.

“What's okay?”

“That you didn't contact me all these years, not even when you came back.”

Jin opened his mouth to say something, but the younger man cut him off.

“You probably didn't want to have anything to do with me, you probably wanted to forget me and move on. That's what I should do too.”

“Kame, you-” Jin started but he was cut off again.

“I know what I'm saying, Jin!” his tone was harsh, almost angry.

They both remained silent. Jin didn't know what to say and Kame was trying to hold back his tears. He wanted to leave. For the first time he thought he'd be better in a place without Jin. But something kept him there. The same thing that didn't let him forget everything, that gave him hopes that he would call, when he never did. But for the first time, Kame wanted to fight it and leave Jin. He knew that if he stayed nothing would happen, he'd probably get more mad at him.

So Kame stood up from the sofa. He didn't look at the other man, he just headed for the door, determined to leave.

“Kame!” he heard Jin say.

But he didn't stop. He didn't want to. He might have said it was okay that Jin hadn't call him even once, but he had lied. He was sick of it. He knew that after this day, Jin wouldn't contact him any more. That he'd probably spend his days waiting for a sign from him, that he would never get, and he didn't want that. He wanted to move on for once.

So he slammed Jin's apartment door as hard as he could. He walked a few steps away, and then, surprisingly he found himself waiting for Jin to come out and stop him.

Enough of this, Kame - He told himself - It's not like he's going to come out.

As Kame headed for the stairs, he heard a door open. His eyes widened in surprise when he turned around and saw Jin.

“You forgot your clothes.” he said.

Great, that's why he came out, to tell me I forgot my clothes.

“Keep them as a memory.” Kame said in his coldest tone.

He turned on his heels and left. He went out in the cold rain, not caring that he didn't even have an umbrella, and that he was going to get sick and all of his group members will yell at him for that. He glanced for the last time at Jin's building.

Though, it was nice seeing you, Jin.

---

When Kame left the office it was raining. The last thing I needed, - he thought. He'd started to dislike the rain ever since that day. It always reminded him of Jin.

But as much as he disliked it, he didn't bother taking a cab. He started walking through it, heading home. The only thing that he liked about the rain it was the sound of the raindrops hitting the ground. They were like music to him. He missed making music, with KAT-TUN. When Jin had left, the band separated too. They said it was no use to go on without Jin, the “A” of the band, the one who was always cheerful. The smile-maker Jin. Jin, the one who was always fooling around. Jin, the one who always made jokes that made Kame laugh until he was out of breath. Jin, the one whom Kame loved.

Kame sighed at the thought of him. I shouldn't have let him go that day.

As he turned right, he bumped into someone. He lifted his eyes and looked at that person, about to apologize. The moment their eyes met he forgot everything. He never believed he'd stare into those deep, brown eyes again. But there they were, right in front of him. And of course they could only belong to one person. Jin.

Kame stepped a few steps back in confusion. It felt hard to breather, like he had some asthma attack.

“What-what are you doing here?” he finally managed to ask, breathless.

“Looks like we meet again. In the same condition. Um. I just moved here.” Jin answered.

No. No. No. Why? Why, of all places, why would he move here? Oh, God please tell me this isn't happening.

“O-Okay.”

Kame walked passed Jin and tried to move on, to his house. He felt his legs trembling, his whole body was. He heard footsteps following him. He didn't need to look. He knew who it was.

“Stop it. Stop following me.” he said and stopped in front of Jin.

“We kind of need to talk.” he heard the older man say.

Kame turned on his heels and faced him.

“We do not need to talk. We had a thing, you left, then we met again and I left. That leaves us with nothing to talk about.”

Jin let out a sigh.

“Kame, please. We have to talk.”

“About what? About you leaving me and not telling me the reason why? About you not contacting me even when you came back? Jin, if I wasn't good enough for you, you could've just said so, you didn't have to leave. I'm sure that it would've hurt me less.”

Kame started walking away. He didn't need to hear Jin anymore. He didn't want to see him anymore.

“You don't understand! - Jin yelled after him - I didn't leave because of you.”

The younger man stopped and turned around.

“Then, why did you?”

“Kame, I left because I didn't want to hurt you.”

“Well, guess what. You've hurt me more than you would've hurt me if you had stayed. And now, you think that by showing up in front of me, you're not hurting me?” Kame said harshly.

“I know... But, Kame, you've no idea what you're talking about.”

“Then explain it to me. The reason why you left.”

Jin couldn't believe that Kame was being so bitchy.

“I don't want to tell you, because, if I do you'll only be with me because of pity and I don't want your pity.”

“If you're not going to tell me, I'm leaving.”

Kame turned and started walking. He heard Jin shouting his name and running after him, but he didn't stop. He was sick of Jin. He wanted to move on. Why couldn't he do that too?

“I'm sick!” Jin blurted out.

Kame stopped, in shock. He turned around slowly and looked at the man in front of him. He looked hurt. The younger man didn't dare say anything. The sound of the raindrops was the only sound around them. He must be joking.

“What is it? A cold or maybe some mental disease. You know, you should go see a psychologist, to help you make up your mind, since you keep on leaving then coming back.”

Jin tried to hold back his tears, he couldn't believe that Kame was being so mean. He was never like that.

“No, Kame. I'm dying.” he whispered.

Kame's eyes widened in shock. This was not happening.

“Wh-What is it?” he mumbled.

“I have a weak heart.”

“How much longer are you going to live?”

There was silence. Please, don't say a week or less - Kame begged.

“I don't know... I could die any second.”

It was worse than Kame could expect. Tears started rolling down his cheeks.

“Then, why are you back? - he asked crying - Why aren't you in a hospital, trying to get better, maybe there's a chance -”

Jin cut him off.

“There's no chance for me to live.”

Kame did not want to hear this. This was wrong. Maybe it was a dream and he'd wake up soon, in his bed. Please let me wake up, - he begged - please. But nothing happened. This was real and even if he didn't want to admit, it was happening.

Jin got closer and hugged him. He's the one being sick and I'm the one who's being comforted.

“I'm back because of you. - Jin whispered in his ear - Because I want to spend more time with you.”

Kame hugged Jin tightly, not wanting to let him go. God couldn't take him, he belonged to him and only him.

---

The days passed by slowly. Kame was worried sick about Jin. Since they didn't live together Kame tried to spend every free moment with him. Whenever Kame couldn't sleep, he called Jin. Hearing his voice made him feel better, less worried, at least he knew he was still alive.

They always spent their weekends together. Kame was doing his best at keeping Jin alive. He was trying to not make Jin too happy or too sad. He'd understood that he had a weak heart and because of that sadness, happiness, even love could kill him, if they made his heart beat too fast.

The younger man had tried convincing Jin to move in with him, but he didn't want to. He'd said he'd be better like this and that he wanted to live longer, to stay with Kame longer. He'd said he didn't want to leave him alone, that he wanted to love him forever. But Kame guessed that the moment Jin said those words, he already was aware that everything that he was saying was impossible. But Kame took the decision to live with that fake hope Jin had given him, if that made him happy.

---

Kame couldn't sleep. He'd tried calling Jin so many times but he never answered. Many thoughts passed through his head. Maybe he'd fainted or worse, maybe he even died. A small voice in his head tried to relax him by saying “Maybe he's having a shower or maybe he's already asleep and he doesn't hear the phone.” - but Kame felt like something was wrong. No. He knew something was wrong, but he just couldn't figure out what.

The second his phone rang, his heart skipped a beat. Please, let it be him - he thought. He couldn't recognize the caller-id, but he answered anyway.

“Hello?”

He could hear someone's fast breathing at the end of the other line, but they didn't say anything. Kame waited for a few more moments. He was getting anxious. What if Jin was trying to call and he couldn't reach him, because he was on the phone with this unknown person, who wasn't even saying anything. He was about to hang up when he heard that person mutter his name.

“Kame...” he said again.

“Jin!” - Kame's heart felt relieved. He wasn't dead, he was okay. Jin kept breathing heavily at the other end of the line, making Kame anxious again. - “What's wrong?”

“Meet me at the entrance of the hospital, as soon as possible.”

Then Kame heard a beep. Jin had hung up.

Kame didn't think. He got dressed with the first clothes he found and he stormed out of the apartment, running to the hospital. The only thought running through his head was: “He's dying. And I can't save him.”

Kame run as fast as he could. When he saw the hospital he started running faster, until he finally saw Jin waiting for him. The older man was wearing old, dirty clothes. He looked really sick. Kame stopped in front of him, panting. Jin didn't wait for him to say anything and he just threw his arms around the younger man. He hugged him tightly, like he didn't want to let go of him.

“Let's go for a walk.” Jin whispered.

Kame nodded and put his hand around Jin's shoulders. They started walking through the city, without saying a word. It wasn't necessary for them to talk, they were okay with just being close, feeling each other's warmth.

They went to the park. It was empty. They laid on the grass and stared at the stars. They were shining so brightly.

“Someday - Jin started - I'll be one of them.”

It hurt Kame hearing him say that. He didn't want him to be a star, he wanted him to be Jin, and to be together with him forever.

“I'll be able to look at you while you sleep.” Jin said again. Kame remained silent. It was too hard for him to bare with Jin's future death.

“Kame, when I die, I want you to move on. Don't keep on thinking about me. It'll be harder for you.”

“Stop it. Stop talking like you're about to die. Like you'll die any second from now. Just stop it.”

Kame tried to hold back his tears. He was aware that if he cried it'd only make Jin sad, and he didn't wish for that to happen.

“It's my fate, Kame. To die. It's my fate.”

Kame stood up.

“Let's go back - his voice cracked and tears rolled down his cheeks - to the hospital.”

Rain started pouring from the sky. Jin laughed. Kame looked at him, confused.

“Why...?”

“It always rains. When we met for the first time after two years, when we met for the second time, and now.”

“I guess you're right... Now let's go.”

Jin nodded and reached his hand towards Kame, so he'd help him up. The moment he was up, he clung to the younger man.

“Let me feel the rain on my skin for a bit more.” he whispered.

Kame nodded. Jin closed his eyes, wrapped his arms around the man's waist and put his head on his chest.

They stayed like that for God knows how long. Slowly, Kame felt Jin's grip loosen up, he was getting heavier and he was falling from Kame's arms. The younger man caught him.

“Jin.” he whispered. But there was no answer. “Jin! Jin!” he yelled for several times. But there was no answer because Jin, was already gone.

A/N:I was in the mood of writing depressing things. And I guess I got inspired by the tear jerker movie "A millionaire's first love" as you might have already figured it out. I also wrote this for a competition at our school. I'm sorry if there are grammatical mistakes. It's one AM and I did my best checking the errors. Oh, and it's the longest one one-shot I've ever written. x]. I hope you've enjoyed it. [:
