What Amazon could learn from Google

I like Amazon a lot. So much so that one year they gave me a coffee mug for Christmas because I bought so much smurf from them.

But their home page leaves a lot to be desired, especially when compared to Google's. Sure, Amazon's home page is awfully busy, presenting me with tons of smurf in which I have no interest. There is a compelling, Zen ( Read more... )

But, see, from a marketing perspective, the longer you dwell on their pages, the more you might see something else that you might buy. Sometimes stores don't want you to be efficient -- which is why groceries usually locate the milk refrigerators in the back of the store.

I'll allow that some vendors attempt to garner more impulse purchases by making other purchases inconvenient. However, in the case of Amazon, it will most definitely not work since I've rather been trained to preposition the cursor and my gaze over that area to more quickly skip to the searching.

I wonder if they offer a concise form of the home page like they do for your wish list. That would help some. Or maybe I can make a bookmark that goes to Google with the site pre-specified...
