huskyscotsman is making me do a meme. O humanity.

1. How many books do you own?

Somewhere in the neighborhood of a thousand. I've begun trying to squish the less-good books into better books by running them through a local used bookstore.

2. What's the last book you bought?

Last week I bought Hammered by Elizabeth Bear and Singularity Sky by Charlie Stross. I was well-pleased by both, though Singularity Sky has by far the wackier things going on.

3. What's the last book you read?
...with pictures?
...non-fiction?

Rather than tell you the last book I read (see #2 above), I will tell you about the book I am currently reading: Blue Shoe by Anne Lamott. Lamott has a gift for stringing together sentences that are at once revelatory about characters and a delight to read. The whole isn't quite congealing for me yet, but given that it's a character-driven story without a driving plot, that's to be expected.

The last book with pictures is undoubtedly Baloney, Henry P. by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith. Wonderfully silly children's book.

Non-fiction: Blink, by Malcolm Gladwell. Interesting information about thin-slicing information to arrive at conclusions quickly, which seems like a good feature for us to have evolved. There are tantalizing applications and examples given without the book ever explaining how you'd do thin-slicing well.

4. Name five books that mean a lot to you.

Hm hm hrm. Don't hold me to this list later. Was, by Geoff Ryman. The Corrections, by Jonathan Franzen. Memory, by Lois McMaster Bujold. The Visual Display of Quantitative Information, by Edward Tufte. The Bible.

5. Name five people you'd like to see answer these questions (if they haven't already).

I will third requests for storme, second for inkylj, and add dfan, dmk, and joyeuse13.
