What made him indifferent enough to the human host to drink? How did he feel about it? They never explained it, in part because it seems they want to keep this "is he or isn't he?" tension going for as long as they can stretch it out. The quick answer to that part is that until 4.22 Sam apparently drank blood only from Ruby whose human host was dead. *sigh* Yeah, I listened to that commentary, too, and it was just amazing how disorganized the approach to a huge arc like that seemed to be sometimes. I wonder how much of an impact Bob Singer had in grounding them through the season...? Not much, by the look of S5. :/ I'm so grateful they didn't drag out the Lucifer vessel story. It was painful enough to listen to the numerous speeches about Doom and Destiny without some false mystery about it, too. If it had been kept a "secret," can you imagine the parallels they would have used to make sure we caught this Important Clue before the Big Reveal? Ugh...
I suspect Singer is very grounding but mainly on the episodic level. The larger arcs don't tend to show any sign of it, and I gather those were Kripke's domain in terms of hitting certain mile posts in his overall story idea.

I've missed a true unraveling of all that pressure they created in certain episodes and in season 5.
This. So much this. I hope this season they stop shielding the inner workings of his character development for the sake of suspense. Sera likes him, so there is hope on that front.
