Let the Solid Ground Not Fail
Dean, Sam | 1053 words | G | set after "Home"

I posted a version of this way back in 2006 and was too shy to keep it public. smilla02 and dotfic were encouraging me to get back into writing, so I have tried to rewrite this ficlet since it was the one that derailed my confidence way back when. Many thanks to my betas back in 2006, dotficRead more... )

This is so amazingly full of sensory detail, it anchors the reader right in that car, with the warmth of the familiar body in the next seat radiating onto Dean's skin and cementing his awareness Sam's there, the sounds outside the car, the scent of night-dew and faint road exhaust. And when Dean's mind and memory start to wander, the reader's goes with it, anchored still in the sticky slick vinyl upholstery of the car seat.

Lovely, beautifully crafted. Thanks for reposting.

You write with such an evocative turn of phrase that creates lovely imagry -- quiet beats of contemplation and longing for a character who is so tired of the weight on his shoulders but who is unable to set it aside.

Dean's weary, still, but wide awake.

There is the longing for his mother, for that sense of comfort she was able to impart to a four year old child stripped away so suddenly -- all Dean has left is the shadow of that memory to try holding onto.

No anchor, indeed. Still, a few constants left giving him strong walls.

And still so true, despite or perhaps even because of everything that's come since -- this doesn't feel dated but rather timeless to Dean's character. Lovely job. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you so much for your comment! *hugs* I'm so glad it worked for you. I'm relieved it doesn't feel out of date, too. Thank you so much for saying that! <333 It was one worry reposting this after so long. I think Dean never really lets go of what he absorbs in; he just keeps absorbing more and more, and he doesn't ever lose the weight that he takes on.

Thank you, again. <333
