i love this character... and sometimes, i don't.

Someone recently asked me how I manage to keep on watching a show that makes me so unhappy. Someone else asked me for my honest opinion: do I love a particular character, do I hate him, or am I indifferent? Well, the short answer is that I love more about both the story and the character than I hate. That’s the easy answer. But too much is being ( Read more... )

Aw, man, you totally awoken my inner Sherlock Holmes with your characters descriptions in the beginning. *g* So far I can identify Jaime Lannister. And possibly Walter Bishop?

Other than that, I kind of agree. I mean, I have my limits on what behaviour I find acceptable or redeemable so if a character disappoints me in a certain way or has flaws I just find intolerable from the start, I find myself unable to love them, enjoy them or invest in them.

Though mostly the key is how the writing handles that behaviour or what the context of the story is. Some are set in a dark, gritty world, populated with anti-heroes so character simply can get away with more there. Or, it is VD where every single character in the larger context is a self-involved jerk but in their little bubble of friends and foes, they are still all loveable. :D

Jaime Lannister, definitely. Hmm, that other one fits several characters... ;)

I mostly get upset when fans whitewash character flaws and pretend as if they didn't exist or were brought on only because of this other character over there, therefore their favorite is blameless. It really, really bothers me.

As far as in-universe, it's definitely how well the writing handles it; I agree. A character can be honestly flawed, but if the writing treats it as nothing or exaggerates it in a roundabout way to apologize for the character, then it loses poignancy and meaning for me.

Thank you for this post. ♥

And especially this: Yes, actually flawed-not sympathetically damaged or too good for this sinful earth.

You're welcome! <333

It is such a pet peeve of mine for characters to be "flawed" but not too much. It's like those delicate scratches on some actor's face when they're fighting or fall down a cliff or something.

(It deserves more I know, but there's not much to follow this. Other than... word!)

xox

Don’t give me caricatures of goodness and innocence. I want them no more than I want caricatures of evil.

Double yes.

Thank you so much. <333

That's one thing I love about SPN. I can't invest myself in a show unless the characters are complex and messy.
