Well...I figured I would wait and get all my thoughts together and get the full translation before commenting about this. I must say, this chapter showed how much several people have changed since the beginning of the series. There was also a lot of 'Tohru influence' all over the chapter...
The first thing that really hit me as looking at the scans was the complete CALM of Kyou through the entire chapter. Even when his father attacks him, even when he starts to remember details surrounding his mothers death that he had blocked out, he remains extremely even through most of the chapter. I would say he was expressionless, but...that aura of depression that has surrounded him these last few chapters remained. Any emotions he did have came from that 'look' in his eyes.
Needless to say I am extremely proud of Kyou through this chapter, he faced probably one of his hardest demons down in the face and I not surprised that the 'how' or 'why' surrounding his mothers death. Those who know me, know I have never thought his mother was 'bad' or 'neglectful' but extremely abused by his father. The flashbacks of a little Kyou hiding and his comments about 'the day after that night you cried so hard' led me to believe that his mother did really care, but tried to protect him too much. I don't know how well it can be seen, but I think there is a thin picture of Kyou closing his eyes as his mother walked off the edge.
Something I found interesting, when we flashback to the time that Kyou moved in with Kazuma and 'showed him the world' in previous volumes...Kazuma took him to look at trains. Knowing Kazuma, he was doing it as a form of therapy for Kyou. Just a step in healing, like he did when he took him to the woods for those months.
Can I just say again how much I LOVE Kazuma? What he did for this kid, no matter the reason...probably saved Kyou's life in so many ways. Knowing the background of Kyou, it makes more sense of the reasons why he played such a big role in Rin's life as well. A lot of people tend to discount Kazuma's influence on the Jyuunishi, I personally would like to see how he has helped the ones he has gotten his hands on. Each of them have a lot of respect for him. Rin, Haru, Yuki, Kyou, Kagura...but some people seem to forget where we first found Hiro when he ran off from Tohru.
"Hiro, how many times do I have to tell you to take your shoes off in the dojo." ~Kyou
In taking in the younger Jyuunishi, Kyou was placed as the 'son' of their 'safe haven'. Sure, he's still the cat, still scorned and looked down upon...but...he was there, he was a 'friend' and he was 'family' to them. Yuki was jealous of that aspect, since he was kept so far away from them. Kazuma, just by being himself, probably put a big dent in the bond with just that simple action.
Ah...yes...enough fangirling and back to the chapter. I kind of missed the 'old' Kyou a little in this chapter, I wouldn't change how she did it...it just made me wonder WHAT he's going to be like when this is all done. One of the things about Tohru that amazes me, is her ability to find a part of herself in people, to find her own faults and help others overcome their own. She did that with Kisa about the teasing and not wanting to tell anyone, Ritsu with finding/making your own reason for living (which ironically came soon after Kyou's transformation), Rin with the fear of being alone, the list can go on and on...but the two notable people she saw herself in were Akito and being left behind and not wanting to move on...and Kyou...who IS the onigiri in the Sohma's Fruits Basket. We get to see a little of what her influence has done to those two.
Starting with Kyou, he's pretty much learned to find himself and things he likes in others. He can see a reflection of his old self in his father...and knows what he needs to do to 'heal' the man. He isn't giving up on him, just like Tohru and Shishou never gave up on him. He then notices Tohru's kindness and caring in Kisa.
Akito...I really hope they show her journey in these next few chapters. She has a lot of things to atone for, hopefully her first people are...pretty close to where she is headed. Kyou's natural next move IS Akito...in order for him to be 'ready' to see Tohru, he has to gain his freedom. Either by breaking his curse (he's moving forward...is that why he's so sick? It's possible that Akito ordered everything destroyed because she knows it is happening, he has an entire other form to get rid of...) or by standing up to Akito (which he isn't going to have to do, but he doesn't know that.) Hiro and Kisa, she hasn't seen Hiro since his curse broke and she owes Kisa...a huge apology. Working up the line...after hitting those three, she'd probably take a walk to Shishou's and find Rin. Just my prediction.
Anyway, I adored Hiro and Kisa in this chapter. They are just adorable and the fact that they want to help Kyou clean up his puke...HAHHAHAHHAA They get ALL of my love at the moment. Complete change in Hiro's attitude here...wow...he's really grown up.
There have been several debates I have seen about the ending of this chapter, ranging from OMG TOHRU IS BLIND, to Kyouru wanting to see each other.
Thinking a bit on it, and the fact that Tohru is on the roof and leaning against a chainlink fence...well...it kind of symobolizes her lack of freedom at the moment. I would love to see Akito's conversation with Tohru from earlier in the day. Both her actions and thoughts are about moving forward, letting them go. Momiji came back to her, in a startling way...as a friend. It is possible that most of their (Tohru and Akito's) conversation centered around how the curse WAS breaking and how that scared her, but she was going to do what she could to help.
After all of her hard work, Tohru is stuck in a hospital room...unable to watch this happen.
I'd want to see too...
Of course, Kyouru moment is good for me :) I think the only thing he has LEFT to deal with is Akito...
Finally (fangirl squeal) that ending line was BEAUTIFUL!
We should be seeing lots of Akito in the next few chapters, I think. Yay! I can't wait to see!
The Kyouru manifesto is coming along...it's very rough but almost fully written. I am having a lot of fun with it.
Hope all is good with everyone else. I can't wait to get out of work tonight, my husbandy person is taking me shopping for a new couch! I can't wait!!
