Health and Fitness and.. slacking

It's been a long week, and I feel terrible cause I haven't been to the gym, or even pulled out the Wii Fit to do any exercise whatsoever. I've also eaten things I should not have, had a binge moment or two, and generally disgusted myself.

Last Friday was a planned no-gym day cause we were going to Windsor to spend the night, and head to the David Read more... )

The main thing is to get over the guilt and get back in. Indeed, a number of nutritionists I know advocate a 80/20 diet plan, where you allow one day in five to have a treat that isn't on diet. Why? Because almost everyone will break a diet. As my stepmother puts it, it's not if, it's when. And often guilt will keep people from getting back on program again. Don't let the occasional stumble convince you that it can't be done, you *can* do it!

Thanks for that. Part of the problem was discouragement, I'm realizing. My doctor visit last week didn't show as good results as I'd have liked, only a pound weight loss, and I think that was the true, deep-down catalyst for a defeated week. I am back on track and I like your advice. One day in five to have a treat. So once a week I can have that to look forward to.

My trainer today told me I shouldn't fret over the holidays either. One or two 'bad' meals isn't going to kill me, or ruin my diet. Just don't let it start a pattern. :)

Yeah, one thing to keep in mind is that weight loss is *never* a smooth linear process. Your weight will fluctuate in both directions while on a diet. The problem is the upticks tend to be so discouraging when they happen that it makes you want to give up. You're going to have to learn that the weekly checkups, etc., don't mean anything, it's the long term deal that should be your focus. A pound may not seem like much, but a pound lost here or there will most definitely add up in the long term!

Don't give up, otherwise you'll have a grumbling Dave snarling at you (believe me, you don't want me snarly!), and do follow the 80/20, as it makes the whole diet and workouts less of a torture, especially if you realize you're treating yourself that one day because you've earned it.

And your trainer is right to tell you to not fret the holidays overly much. This change is to help you with your health and happiness. It requires certain sacrifices, sure, but it shouldn't be a straightjacket that stifles the enjoyment of life. The main thing is working on getting the mindset changed, of breaking the pattern that rules our eating and living habits. You can do it!
