It wasn't terribly well-received with my kids, but I gave them a few key words/phrases to incorporate into a story. It was interesting to read at least ( ... )

I've had some fun ones.

-Write a novel in only the chapter titles.

-Write the same (short) story several times over, changing I to you to John (first, second, third person), or past and present tense to see how things change.

-Sketch out a story (one line summary of what the character wants, main character, time & place, etc), write it on an index card, then mix the cards up and make everyone write the story on the card they draw.

Stuff like that. Be creative.

poetry round robin... write two lines, pass it to someone, they write two lines in response or relating to the first two lines, then fold the paper so that the first two lines are not showing, and continue around the group

random word grab writing

bringing objects or having students bring objects and write about their observations... what they see, feel, touch, smell, etc
