which is a flyer titled "Upgrade you PC to Dual Core For Below S$300". At first sight, I was about to dismiss it as some advertisement and throw it away until I took a further look and realise it has the emblem captioned "Xedo Defense.Org".

Under the title "Community Service: Some Interesting Info", a list of Odex-episode related informations ( Read more... )

it reads like propaganda.

"do you know" seems to be a potent tool to exploit ignorance (or insufficient knowledge) with. whoever's behind this ought to put down some verifiable sources, as opposed to simply taking newspaper content out of context for publicity's sake. fear + ignorance = stupidity?

funny that a comparison with Holland and the US should be suggested.

anyway, ingenious means to generate business for PacNet, heh.

Yeap, the lack of citiable and reliable sources is mainly what led me to have doubts.

Well, isn't fear and ignorance the instruments of propaganda lol?

actually
their first point isn't that far fetched as it seems

downloading for educational purposes isn't illegal provided you delete whatever you downloaded withing 24 hours.

therefore downloading =/= crime.
distributing+hoarding copyright files online for commercial purposes is, download/file transfer is just a means to achieve the above criminal result.

That I agree. What I referred to as far fetched is the speculation of the abuse of informations obtained from the ISP as well as fallaciously glorifying criminals of other sort so as to vividly cast Odex in the worst possible light, if not portrayed as a mere bully.

The use of Holland and USA as successful examples are not relevant as the emphasize on human rights is different from in Singapore and I think sueing for damage due to privacy is not likely to be that successful here right?

it's exactly like odex banking on the misconception of downloading instantly equates to criminal activity and their fear tactics of using the legal system to force most ignorant singaporeans into settling the issue outside of court.
imo, IF everyone was aware of their downloading rights, odex will be involved with a lawsuit for every letter they sent out. if the matter drags out, odex can and may be bankrupt due to this, and at the very least, they can say goodbye to whatever kind of sales they have before this.

Observations like these beat some sensational and far-fetched speculations, unless the flyer is trying to rally support and rapport only from those who can't read critically. And possibly not able to bring about a rightful impact either.

I can't stand the bullying act with questionable approaches from Odex either but I feel that the public should also be properly be educated against them rather then to be dismiss the flyer's attempt as mere bad-mouthing or downplaying.
