I saw it when it first came out, made it through the opening song and not much farther. Reaction: oh, man, this is so cliched. Only after I started watching Bakemonogatari did I find out the two are by the same team, and I found out that the cliches were on purpose. Okay! That changes everything... and now I am catching up. I'd say no spoilers but in a series that appears to be intending to skewer just about every cliche and then some, it's not like spoilers make much difference.
But I still prefer Bakemonogatari, if I had to make a choice -- the art in Katanagari does bug me. I can live with it, but it doesn't have half the grace of the other.
I think the art takes some getting used to, and I can understand being bothered by it, but it's grown on me. Particularly when it really hits its groove. It's not perfect--for example, some episodes get painfully exposition heavy--but accepting that... I really enjoy it. It's fun, and the fact the cliches are mostly sort of tongue in cheek makes Shichika in particular a lot more likable for me than he would be if he really was just the dumb hero type.
It's also got a better-than-average ratio of male to female characters, once you get into it, and while they aren't individually necessarily groundbreaking, they're pretty diverse as a whole, which doesn't hurt my feelings any.
I have to finish Bakemonogatari still. I like what I've seen of it, and agree that the art is very graceful at points, but I got distracted about half way through it and haven't gotten back to it yet.
