So I realized today that the Nemesis villains in Sailor Moon R was actually a reference to the Nemesis hypothesis, which is basically that the sun has a dwarf twin with a bunch of comets around it that comes around every 26 million years to cause a major extinction because of the comet bombardment that comes with it. I always thought the Nightfall civilization went bonkers because of the sudden lack of light therapy. Like someone being taken off their medication. So the non sequitur of the stars being the last straw made sense to me, in that anything after the lights finally went out could have been the catalyst but making it the stars was supposed to be thematic.

But eh, it's definitely not perfect. I always hated the verisimilitude breaking mention of Earth. Don't even get me started on The Cold Equations. ^_^

That actually makes so much more sense to me. I'd always read it as them being all prepped to handle the darkness and they could have handled that BUT THE STARS DROVE THEM MAD. I don't know if your interpretation is what Asimov meant or not, but I'll take whatever works!

I don't think I've ever actually met anyone who couldn't rant at length about The Cold Equations. Seriously, it's one of the most overtly and infuriatingly contrived stories I've ever read.
