“So…” Gojyo started one night while they were huddled around the campfire. Goku buried himself deeper in his blanket and Sanzo grunted, pretending to be asleep. Hakkai was absently petting Hakuryu and looked up at the sound of the redhead’s voice.

“So?” he repeated.

Gojyo cleared his throat. “So… you an’… Yaone-chan, huh?”

Hakkai blinked. “Sorry? What about her?” In all honesty, he wished that Gojyo hadn’t brought it up that very second. No matter how hard he tried to convince them otherwise, it was obvious that Sanzo was still awake. Goku’s eyes were drooping, but he now had subtly perked up. Best to just play dumb in this scenario.

“You two… somethin’s goin’ on, right?”

Hakkai shot back one of his most convincing smiles. “I have no idea what you’re talking about, Gojyo. Yaone-san and I are just friends, nothing more, nothing less.”

Just friends, Hakkai reminded himself the next night. Things were already looking up when the Ikkou found a town and managed to get four separate rooms in a nice inn this time.

Hakkai was innocently out shopping when he’d accidentally - completely by coincidence - run into Yaone. She was easy to spot, even with her limiters on. He recognized her dark hair pulled up into a simple ponytail and how well the deep violet dress complimented her features. Any friend would notice another’s good fashion sense.

The woman had just been running a few errands, so she told him, and this particular town just happened to have a rare local herb used in some of her medicines. It sounded like a perfectly logical alibi, even though Hakkai noticed that there were no purchases of any kind on her person.

He told himself that he was just engaging her in friendly conversation. He offered to buy her something to drink, seeing as she had such a long journey back to Houtou Castle. What he wasn’t sure of was how it got from wine at a nice restaurant to letting her ‘freshen up’ in his hotel room. Common courtesy, most likely.

When Yaone emerged from the bathroom, Hakkai was still sitting on his bed, wondering what to do next. He looked up to see that her hair was now down and free instead of back in a ponytail and he had to remind himself frantically that friends most likely noticed when one another really looked very pretty. Yes, that sounded like something friends did.

“Thank you for everything tonight,” Yaone said, clasping her hands in front of her and bowing her head. Hakkai insisted that it was no problem and stood up from the bed, intending to show her to the door.

He wasn’t sure who acted first. Perhaps he had been the one who had pressed her against the door, hands coming to rest on her hips. Or maybe Yaone was the one who pulled him closer, one hand gently cupping his cheek and drawing his face towards her own.

Whatever the case, one person’s lips touched the other’s and Hakkai was gone. ‘Friends kiss each other goodbye all the time,’ his brain desperately tried to rationalize, but he stopped it from going any further. He was very focused on Yaone’s mouth and how soft and warm she was right now. He allowed her to pull his head closer and abandoned thought completely.

Yaone finally let him up for air and they just looked into each other’s eyes for a few seconds. Hakkai wanted to say something, anything, but for once could think of nothing appropriate. It was only a few more seconds before Yaone let him go and excused herself. Then, it was as if she’d never been there - the only difference at all was the fact that none of Hakkai’s justifications applied anymore.

The next morning, Gojyo tried again. The healer was getting Jeep ready for the drive that day and Sanzo and Goku were still inside, packing up their things. The hanyou casually leaned against the hood of the car, watching Hakkai as he loaded the bags into the back.

“So…” He paused to light up. “You an’ Yaone-chan, huh?”

Hakkai took a deep breath. “What about us?”

Gojyo grinned. “There’s somethin’ goin’ on between you two, right?”

“Nothing to speak of. Why do you ask?”

Hakkai was glad he was turned away from his friend when Gojyo answered, because he knew the other man was enjoying this. “No reason. Still friends, I guess then.”

“Something like that.”
