Jobless

Ugh. Left a reasonably well-paying position at BC to move to Austin and have been unemployed now for 5 ish months. Not for a lack of trying. Applied to very many jobs: customized resumés, cover letters, networking, etc. This is despite applying for jobs above, at, and below my level, and having more than a decade in the industry, a BS in C.S. and a ( Read more... )

Hey. Thanks for the comment. With my education background, there are a lot of jobs that I could work and would enjoy. Having said that, my experience is in Desktop Support and Technology Consulting. The former was Tier 2 or 3 support with the commensurate maintenance, inventorying, and server administration. The consulting was mostly purchasing and setting up workstations and digital archives, but also with realizing energy efficiency at a enterprise level.

If you know of any opportunities, let me know. Thanks.

Not wanting to wait, I checked out your suggestion. I have some experience using VMs, but I've never managed them at an enterprise level. To be clear, I've never used ESX/vSphere products.

That's not to say I couldn't learn, but, that there's a serious gap there. That on top of the fact that you HAVE to take a course before they'll certify you (regardless of whether or not you pass the exam) and that the course costs ~$3,000 to say nothing of lodging, exam costs, etc. I don't think I can swing it. I don't have a job and Andy and I are saving intensively right now.

What I need to do at this point, is get my feet back up under me so that I can do whatever needs to be done to start moving up the ladder. Unfortunately, it seems like my time at BC was not well spent and the experience I acquired there has not prepared me to land a great job.

My question to you is, how do I build upon my qualifications, in a cost efficient way, to make myself hireable?

Thanks Pook,
S
