I was playing around with some effects in Photoshop, and I found this one to look really pretty. And well...my third tutorial, be nice.

This is the way I do it - I open the gradient/texture in Photoshop as an image, and then drag it directly onto the image I'm working on.

I also find this to be a lot of help for textures, as well as this for installing gradients.

I do it like this:
On the left there is a layer bar. Click the "New layer" and then ctrl+o to open one of your texture/gradient.
