I went to watch Godzilla last Sunday, mostly because I liked Pacific Rim so much and wanted another dose of giant monsters vs humanity goodness. It was not what I had expected.
I fell asleep during the first part of the movie, which may be because I'm running on little sleep these days but I lay the blame on too many boring human scenes. The movie focused too much on humans and not the monsters, which is not necessarily a bad thing--look at Pacific Rim! But the humans kept on making mistakes and basically all their efforts were wasted in the entire movie. You should've listened to the Japanese scientist! He predicted that Godzilla would end up saving America's ass, and he did.
If they wanted to make a story about monsters, make the story about the goddamn monsters. This is also what happens when Idris Elba is not around in an apocalyptic situation. Still, for what it's worth, the monsters were really, really epic.

A friend recced this fantastic anime to me weeks ago. (A-chan, if you're reading this, thank youuu!) It's called Gin no Saji or Silver Spoon, and it was written by Arakawa-sensei (Fullmetal Alchemist). That's reason enough to go watch/read it, if you know what I mean. ;)
It's basically a show about an agricultural high school. Hachiken Yuugo enters the school mostly as a way to escape from his family but ends up having a really great time there. It's slice-of-life and coming-of-age, my two favorite genres when done right and man does Arakawa-sensei do this thing justice. It's mostly hilarious but it doesn't pull any punches when it comes to how depressing reality can be.
Plus (or maybe a minus? but it's really a plus lbr), this anime has a lot of food porn. Do not watch it if you have no food on hand, especially if piping hot rice and grilled fish and fresh eggs are a turn-on. Unlike Cooking Master Boy, this anime can make you really fucking hungry.
