If you want a shorter answer, I'd say that the first half of the anime is definitely better than the first half of the manga, but the second half of both the manga and the anime had major problems. The manga covered the second-half events too slowly and in too much detail, while the anime condensed and rushed the second half.
Since you've already read the manga, though, you should remember those events well enough to not get confused about what is going on by seeing the ultra-condensed version. Only the rushed pace should be a major issue.
Hmm...I'll keep that in mind. Death Note is on my RentAnime queue, but unfortunately I had to suspend my account for budgetary reasons. I also know no one who has it that I can borrow it from. Bah. I'll see it someday.
Me too. The fandom is certainly slowing down from its height, and it doesn't seem like the franchise will produce anything more that is as exciting as the main canon's manga/anime.

Which would you say you like better? Or do you like them both the same?
