Daiki likes the sea, he likes how blue the water is, how the waves came crashing into the shore, how beautiful the sun sets are, and how peaceful it is when he sits there alone everyday. But most of all, he likes the sea because that’s where the person he loves most came from.
No, Takaki isn’t a merman, but Daiki thinks that their story is a replica of the mermaid stories. He met Takaki a year ago, in the middle of the ocean where he was nearly drowned. Takaki was on a merchant ship that happens to be there and saved him, brought him to shore and back to his house.
Weeks passed, and friendship grew between them. Daiki likes him as a friend, that was what he thought at that time. He would go to town everyday to meet Takaki who were staying at an inn with the other merchants. They would explore the town, the forest, the beaches and when there’s nothing else to do they would just lay around on the sandy beaches and wait till night falls.
There was one particular night which Daiki remembers well, it was a hot summer night and the sky was clear with millions of stars shining on it. Takaki took his hand and inches closer to him, looking at him deep in the eyes which cause his stomach to feel some weird fluttering feelings.
“I’m going next week.” Takaki told him.
“Where?” Daiki had asked stupidly.
“To another place, another country perhaps.”
“Why?” Losing Takaki as a friend would be something that Daiki doesn’t want to happen. “Can’t you stay here?”
Takaki shook his head. “I can’t. Come with me Daiki, let’s explore the world together. There’s so many things I want to show you.”
Daiki blinks, not knowing what to reply at all. He would love to do that, explore the world with Takaki, it would be so much fun, but he can’t. “I can’t, I’m supposed to get married next month, I can’t go with you. Won’t you be able to come here once in a while?”
There was a pained look on Takaki’s face, and Daiki had thought that the other guy was just sad that their friendship had to end there. “Maybe, maybe I will come here again in the future. Do you… do you love her?”
“I never met her before, but father told me that love will come naturally when we spent time together.” Daiki replied him, and Takaki never asked again.
They spent the whole week together, cherishing every minute they have left. And when it was time for Takaki’s ship to depart, Daiki hugs him tight and cried as he said his farwell. “Promise me you will come here again.”
“I will.” Takaki promised as he ruffled the shorter boy’s hair and kiss his forehead. Then he left, and that was the last time Daiki saw him.
It was a few days after the departure when Daiki finally realizes his feelings, realizes why his chest clenched tightly everytime he remembers Takaki, why he can’t seem to be able to not think of him, why he always seems to miss him and why everyday when he wakes up he would feel gloomy just by knowing that Takaki isn’t there any longer to spent the day with him.
His father was right, love comes naturally when you spent time with someone. But he realizes it too late. Takaki was no longer there, he has disappeared into the sea, in a place he doesn’t know and he couldn’t reach to.
All that he could do now was to wait, and Takaki did promised that he will come again, even if it take a year, ten years, or a hundred. Daiki will wait.
Author's note : This was supposed to be Little mermaid, sorry if it doesn't sound like it. I had no idea how it turned out this way :P
