And another thing . . .

I stopped buying cold cereal about a year or so ago.  Cold cereal is interesting in terms of social history and marketing, but it’s not a particularly good breakfast food.  It’s also really expensive and full o’ the excessive packaging.  The local grocery store flyer has various cold cereals on sale for $3.99 (regular $5.99), for boxes of 385 to ( Read more... )

Wow. So amazing that you would post this recipe this morning. Last night I went to bed thinking, I'm sick of being a chump who pays for granola. How come I have never tried to make the stuff? Thanks for the information, friend.

That's really funny. I had the same experience. I don't know why this sort of thing isn't more generally well-known, but I had trouble finding a recipe that didn't involve a huge list of ingredients or a complicated process. Finally, someone at work just told me what she did.

How much crushed nuts do you usually use? Also, how do you crush nuts? Hammer?

It depends on how many you have and what you like (for this much, I add about a cup, and you might want to start there if you're experiementing). If you do add nuts though, it's best to let them cook with the granola. Dried fruit, on the other hand, is best stirred in after.

You can buy nuts that are already in smallish pieces, crunch them up with your hand while you're adding them, or smush them with something heavy like a rolling pin. If you're doing the rolling pin, put the nuts in a ziplock bag (so you can see through it) and crush them in there -- no mess.
