Ok I know I have been commenting you like mad on this, but now I have a chance to tell you why I love this in detail. I said on Twitter it was how honest the performances were - but it's the honesty and vulnerability of the performances combined with the fact that there's no easy payoff or nicely wrapped plot ending that really did it for me. Like the best cinema veritas, this film is a pure slice of life, with two people who nudge each other forwards and back while they try to find a balance between themselves. It pulled no punches on an emotional level, it was brutal and challenging and heart rending, and never afraid to show the ugly side of people. One of my favourite films in recent years.
And the fact that they both grow from it as well, so it's not just sex but they learn a lot about each other and themselves... Arghhh, I need to buy it now. Russelllllllll, Glennnnnnnn. It really was so real, just their banter and bringing each other tea and biscuits in bed!
Exactly this, this is just a snapshot of one facet of their lives - you can feel their lives going on beyond the films end.
One more thing! I normally hate sex scenes in films, but the one (you know the one!) is handled so well - proper emotional connection. Now I want to watch it again RIGHT NOW, stupid bedtime, stupid work x
