observing

It took a little time to make his way down to the observation deck, but he was grateful for it being empty when he arrived. It let him sit down in a chair, angling it so he could look out to the stars, and think with the PADD Joanna gave him tucked into his lap. Beyond the quiet hum of the ship that he was starting to be used to hearing, there was ( Read more... )

There was something comforting about a completely ordinary day, Nyota reflected as she left her tiny office in communications. She'd completed and sent out the new duty roster and taken care of some other administrative tasks requiring her attention, the day otherwise unremarkable. It was a pleasant change, though she knew better than to think it would last.

Feeling a little restless, she decided against going to the quarters she shared with Spock, instead wandering toward one of the observation decks. She spotted Zach almost immediately, hesitating a moment before calling out a soft greeting, not wanting to startle him. He looked like he was absorbed in whatever he was writing. "Hello."

Smiling, she walked over, indicating the empty chair next to him. "Is this seat taken?"

Zach looked up at the greeting, and gave a smile towards Nyota. He was surprised when she wanted to sit beside him, but it was a happy surprise. "Of course not, it's all yours." He gestured to the seat, putting the PADD back into his lap.

He watched her sit down, the same grace that Zoe had. Equally, he wasn't sure what to say to her. It felt awkward.

It did feel a little awkward. Nyota had alternated between amusement and annoyance at Spock's protectiveness, and was sorry it had been directed at Zach. She hadn't sought him out before now, not entirely sure whether he'd want to see her just yet considering that morning.

"How are you?" she asked, curling one foot under her in the chair.

"As good as I can be, I suppose." He hoped he didn't sound like he was complaining. "It's been a little boring, I guess. I'm used to being constantly on the go. Being still for so long is getting to me." His somewhat nervous laugh turned into a smile.
