Fanfic: Signals

I really should work on my other fics. But this plot bunny jumped at me, its hinted SasuNaru, by the way.
Warning, Disclaimers, etc; is I don’t own Naruto and also that this is a one-shot SasuNaru hinted work. Pre-Naruto series, kinda. Ratingis prolly G/PG

Sasuke wasn’t in Naruto’s class until his last year at the academy, where he sat behind the golden-haired boy due to regulations of seat-name ordering. Instead of horizontal, the seat ordering went vertical, from top to bottom and as a result, right behind the idiot, all because his last name was Uchiha and Naruto’s last name was Uzumaki.

Of course, Sasuke knew who Naruto was even before they shared the same class. When you were as infamous as Naruto was for entering the academy three years early but still being the number one dunce with no parents and when you are as popular as Sasuke for being part of the Uchiha clan and number one student of the class, you really couldn’t help but know who was on the opposite side of the spectrum.

Sasuke lived up to his name. He wasn’t sure about Naruto.

Sure, Naruto failed the final exam three times, and, at the end of the year, what seemed like the fourth time, most students who failed it the first time would only fail once then make up for it.

It didn’t explain how Naruto was the mastermind of brilliant pranks or how he could so easily escape their Chuunin teacher’s grasp.

Naruto was good at surprising people. Sasuke remembered sitting behind Naruto on the second day of school that year and watching Naruto do nonsense symbols behind his back- they looked faintly like jutsu seals and at first Sasuke had come to the conclusion he was practicing.

It wasn’t until Naruto, Shikamaru and Chouji all escaped together out the classroom that he realized they were signals. Sasuke also knew that Shikamaru nor Chouji would’ve thought them up, Shikamaru being too lazy and probably only willing to learn them if it meant free cloud-watching time and Chouji would’ve been to absorbed in food.

Over the course of a school week or two Sasuke analyzed and worked out the signals. Those that looked like a vague Tiger seal meant he was planning something, the one that looked like a Snake seal and a Dragon seal mixed together meant the plan was going to take action, and countless others.

It was then he realized Naruto was letting him see the signals, a silent invite to go outside and play and have fun and not have to worry about anything. He didn’t.

It didn’t mean that Naruto stopped communicating to him through the signals. The slight tilt of a head, a sigh, and basic body language also added to Naruto’s ‘conversations’ with Sasuke. It made Sasuke…happy. Sasuke wished he could say something in return.

Sasuke couldn’t respond, as Naruto couldn’t see him.

That’s when the insults started. Insults when Naruto did something stupid, a smirk, a tilt of the head, his own signals to add to Naruto’s signal system, much like how Kiba, when Akamaru spotted what Naruto was doing, used Akamaru’s barks as his own signal back.

Around this time, Naruto seemed to get stupider, if only to hear the insults, to get Sasuke to participate in more signals. Sasuke did so with no trouble, because he knew Naruto was smarter than that (Though how he couldn’t do a simple henge was worrying). No one who is a true dunce could work out such an intricate signal system after all. No one who was a true dunce could pull off such big pranks like graffiti the Hokage Mountain.

He didn’t like how Naruto purposefully failed exams, yet it was still surprising when he found this time Naruto actually passed the exam, doing a private retake with Iruka sensei, he had heard. Sasuke didn’t disillusion himself it was because Naruto wanted to be on the same team as him. Naruto didn’t care about that kind of thing.

Yet when he and Naruto were put onto the same team, it was still surprising. And of course, things changed.

Naruto was still the little boy in class Sasuke secretly liked, but he was also this loud attention-craving boy, which Sasuke hated. It was an odd feeling, being taken aback like that. But Naruto was surprising in that way.

It was only a few weeks, even a few months later (when Sasuke realized Naruto really was quite a bit of an idiot, not just a call for attention) that Sasuke realized Naruto was taking Sasuke’s class signals and adding his own twist to them. Naruto was surprising like that, heck; Naruto’s whole Ninja Technique was based around surprise attacks! Something you needed a brain for, even if some of it couldn’t wrap around the idea of a henge well.

Sasuke appreciated it, though when he and Naruto became rivals, became something like best friends, people were surprised. Another one of Naruto’s surprise tactics? No.

It wasn’t surprising; it was there all along. One just needed to follow the signals.

Owari-おわり

And yes, near the end I was rambling.
