So I was sitting here "working", by which I mean reading Batman comics and thinking about quitting this lousy job. I was reading the news earlier, but that just made me sad. I came across this little gem from one of the people responsible for keeping America safe :

the trouble with leadership positions, especially political ones, is that the best folks for the job often have the good sense not to run in the first place.

I think it was Sherman who said "If nominated I will not run, if elected I will not serve." when one of the parties wanted to have him go for the presidency.

The Romans had a pretty decent system for dealing with the incompetence of politicians, as I recall. They let the politicians run things most of the time, but they could also set up a temporary dictator who held absolute power for a limited term, to deal with national emergencies. I don't think that would work in the modern era, especially not with the extensive police powers wielded by heads of state, but it might be interesting to consider - like when I'm not sitting at work, maybe =)
