Characters, actors, etc.

Many of us love the character Ianto Jones of Torchwood and many of us have extended that love to Gareth David-Lloyd because of his splendid portrayal of the character. Which is why we pay close attention to other roles that he plays in other shows. But we must remember that those other roles and the lives and deaths of those other characters have ( Read more... )

Exactly. Matheson is not Ianto Jones.

GN9 was predictable and lacking any logic. Otherwise the acting, which is the reason I watched it to begin with, was stellar from both Gareth and Joe Absolom.

Yeah, it's terrible to watch wonderfully talented actors playing lacklustre, badly written characters. I did not have a good feeling about Games Borin' (I won't give him any more publicity by writing his real name) before this show aired, and now I find he has lived up to all my low expectations of him.

While I agree with what you've said about character deaths in different shows not being connected ... still ... doesn't it feel like a repeat killing of the character?
There are more than one similarity to help this along. Same writer. Same actor. Same 'feel' in places. Same sense of doom. Children threatened. Child/children die. A race to the conclusion. Similar job in law-enforcement. Ensemble cast. Character who died 'heroically' was otherwise portrayed as a smart, savvy person, and died in a stupid way ...
These were just the things off the top of my head, so I don't blame people if they have a sense of 'continuance' of a theme. But no, it's not a conspiracy, just, as you say, lazy, stupid, boring writing.

I understand what you're saying. The overall feeling is a bit like CoE -- writers promising us something really new and exciting, but the actual product being just a remix of tired old tropes and cliches and horrifying deaths just for the shock factor.
I really don't know what to make of JM: if he knew this show was shite, then he manipulated Gareth's fans into providing publicity and spreading the word for something that he knew wouldn't otherwise get many viewers. Otherwise, if he genuinely thinks that this web series was brilliant, then I'm really worried about his mental health!
