Torchwood Pairings and RTD's Plans

Dec 13, 2009 13:16

It's the feeling in some quarters that the death of Ianto in Torchwood: Children of Earth has left the field open to the Jack/Gwen pairing. I'll tell you why I am not convinced about that.

Mmm I don't think the Excalibur thing is new info, just that no one had been interested in it. It was the addition of Jack that made it become Torchwood, and a different thing, but yes I agree, Gwen has always been the lead. I don't think it has ever been thought through to the extent that you have. Lets face it, both Ianto and Rhys should have died by the end of season 1, that not happening is probably what changed the dynamic ( ... )

Indeed, I did think twice about using the word 'prize' and I should clarify that I didn't really mean it in the belittling 'trophy partner' type of way. You are right about not all fans wanting the same thing, which is why I was careful to use 'many' instead of 'all'. Anyway my whole post is full of speculation -- who knows who will reallly get to write the next series, if there is one.

The Excalibur 'news' I actually heard of only after CoE aired. Previously all I knew was that 'Torchwood' was an anagram of 'Doctor Who' and that it was a pet project of RTD. But it may very well have been known by others long before.

Uhm.. didn't all the Jack/Gwen nonsense end after SB anyway? I don't get why anyone is still concerned about it. It's done. It was a cringe-worthy storyline from the start and RTD bringing it up again in a season four would be a really bad move for him. Not to mention Jack and Gwen have an almost brother-sister relationship going on, and to try and force any sexual chemistry into that again would be reeeally squicky.

Oh dear. I hope there's no Jack/Gwen fans on your flist or I'm gonna get attacked...

Ha ha! Don't worry, my flist is very small anyway and I don't know of any overt Jack/Gwen fan on it.

Though, RTD was convinced that there was Jack/Gwen in COE - apparently, in Day One, Jack finding out Gwen's pregnancy first is indicative of that "competition" between them, and the constant question of who she will "choose" in the end.

JB has said that the pregnancy is the one thing that makes Gwen off limits - so not the fact he already has someone (Ianto) who is totally devoted him, who loves him, who is faithful to him. Nice man.

I think it's true that the reason for systematically getting rid of the whole team was to set up the show he wanted.(BTW-I've also read that he pitched a show like Torchwood to the BBC starring Billie Piper in the character of Rose.It was tentatively called "Rose Tyler:Earth Defender" or "Defender of Earth". It was turned down, and then Torchwood came into being.)
He wanted a show which featured Gwen as the main character, but it only got put on the air because of the character of Jack.
Having only Gwen and Rhys left frees up the show to become what he envisioned all along. So that could mean that Jack will not play a big role in S4, or maybe will guest star and that will be it.
Or,it could be that RTD's soap opera writing background could come into play and there very well could be a triangle.
Either way I won't watch it,lol. Neither scenario appeals to me.
I won't be watching unless Ianto comes back.

I think the 'Earth Defender' thing was just a humourous suggestion on someone's LJ, I remember reading something like that. RTD probably wished to cast Eve all long in a prominent role, but he had to manage things so that it wasn't evident right from the start.
A tiresome love triange where two out of the three characters are played by mediocre actors is really not my cup of tea either!

I hope you don't mind me jumping in, but that doesn't appeal to me either; putting the leads of a show in a triangle (or putting the male and female leads together in general) has been done to death. One of the things I always liked about Torchwood was that they did something different and gave the male lead a male love interest.

I know some people on lj were using that expression, but I did read that about RTD and Rose, and that was the title-unfortunately,lol.
I'm not a big fan of triangles in general, and I wouldn't like to see one with Gwen/Jack/Rhys in particular. The only triangle I could like was one where the principals fought over Ianto :)

Agreed and agreed. I adore UST between characters which comes to naught. Jack is an UST MAGNET. :)

And I love every throwaway line Captain John ever threw.

Here from the torchwood_three newsletter as well.

If there's any re-imagining going on I think it probably has more to do with the power structure. If COE's purpose was anything, besides cleaning house and resetting the show, it was probably more to do with removing Jack from the leadership role and putting Gwen in his place. They're probably not done with the Jack/Gwen otp saga, but I suspect as long as Rhys is around that's definitely on the backburner. I can't see them having her cheat again considering how quickly they wanted to forget the first time, but I can see it eventually playing out a bit like the Doctor/Rose saga if the show lasts long enough just without the clones and the alt. universe or maybe with the clones and the alt. universe ( who knows. RTD does like to recycle his romances).
