I just decided that when the bomb went off it affected the Rift so badly that access to lots of parallel worlds opened up. I'm using the Pertwee era Doctor Who's idea of parallel worlds for this (Inferno, 1970, access to parallel Earth via huge gas explosion), that they are accessable, it's just difficult to travel between them. Rather than the RTD parallel worlds, that they are all permenently cut off from each other.
Day one happened in our world, but days two to five happened in one of the parallel worlds, which is why character's backstories seem to be different to what we've been shown.
And it means we still get to keep Ianto's family, Jack's family, Lois and Johnson.
Good idea. I like it! All the new characters introduced in Day One were interesting, its just that there was too much focus on some of them at the expense of our old Torchwood characters. I too would like to keep Ianto's family (that part really feels like canon, you know?).
Well considering that he said there is no such thing as canon in Dr Who I'm guessing he also applies that to Torchwood; can you really Joss canon if there is nothing to Joss in first place? Personally I think their just going to hand wave away the Rift not opening in series 4.
Hey, we could claim that GDL's Sherlock Holmes film is also part of Torchwood canon (Ianto time-travelled or something). That'll be RTD hoist on his own petard!
Though if RTD gets his wish of Torchwood: South Dakota (or wherever he is supposed to base the Fox TW) then he won't have to worry his pretty little head about the Cardiff Rift at all!

That's probably it. He knew that CoE would be his last Torchwood series so he just didn't care about explaining it.
