So things have been crazy hectic. But i expected that with organic chemistry and all. Thought i'd have alot more time to work on my halloween costume ... but here's halloween and i hadn't started until a couple hours ago. So i'm dying my hair now .... well the dye is sitting in my hair and soaking in. So now, i get to go to class with this ( Read more... )

O-chem can be a real timesink. I remember back in undergrad working my butt off in that class. I think I still remember some of the reactions...keto-enol tautomers, sn1 and sn2, etc. Pushing electrons didn't always work as well for me as memorizing the products of reactions, (though I hate to say so.../shame) Anyway, biochemistry was where things became less nebulous for me. i.e. if you find it tedious - hang in there, there is life after o-chem. ^.-

Ironically, though I thought a lot of the stuff was obscure and not useful at the time (...and some of it was) - I actually use a lot of the info I learned from O-chem today in the biochem lab as a grad student (e.g. functional groups of enzymes and how they work to methylate, demethylate, acetylate, deacetylate w/ certain cofactors and based on their phosphorylation state to regulate chromatin, and express proteins in different cell types, etc.) Chemistry can be fun. It holds the codes and the keys to life and death and all the most beautiful mysteries of the universe!/nerd ^.^
