Nothing wrong with being an obsessive pet owner. I'm sure your pet appreciates it. It's actually a very good idea to pay attention to the ingredients in your pet's food. The foods that have nonmeat ingredients in the fore are filling the food to save on cost. So even if the least you are doing is reading ingredients, you are doing something good for your cat.
There are definitely worse ways to spend your time than finding ways to make your pet's life a better one. If you are going to have a pet, especially one that you may have upwards of 20 years, it shouldn't be weird or nerdy to pay attention to its well being and research how to take care of it; it should be all part of having a pet.
oh I know I'm doing the best thing for her, and I feel good about it- in fact I am really starting to look at people a little weird who just go and stuff their animals full of grocery store brand bullshit and then bitch about how their pets are fat, diabetic, etc... it's been shown that most common diseases in cats & dogs can be eliminated through diet alone. I wish I had realized all this sooner, actually, because she's probably not going to live that long comparatively anyway, having the heart murmur.
and I don't really think I'm obsessive... I haven't screenprinted her onto any t-shirts yet ;)

It's definitely true that changes in diet can effect susceptibility to disease. Hill's has a series of prescription diets that either help animals avoid ingredients during medical problems or promote healthy function of various systems to prevent and control problems.
Speaking from first hand experience with the sickies; it really does make a difference.
But yes, Bob, my vet (all of them in fact) do sell Hill's.
