Well, for me, it's really difficult to pick a character and take only the films into consideration. I consider the SW saga to be just the basic structure of the whole Star Wars universe. It's important and I couldn't live without it but the characters either pale in comparison with some of the EU ones or I just

That's true. Luke always struck me as more sarcastic in the novels.

Yeah, I think the authors are more likely to remember what it was like to be in their thirties than when they were children and therefore are more comfortable writing characters that age.

Plus, it's always nice to see your favourite character to do the smart thing and not what you'd have done. :)
