It really sucks when you realize you gave up your childhood dream so easily. The first thing you ever really wanted.. and you let it go for no good reason at all. Maybe that means you just didn't really want it that bad, some would say. Maybe so, maybe not so

ok so i hope this isn't too stalkery. I just remembered you had a livejournal.

Anyway, I think you should totally join the peace corp, or maybe an equivlant of it.

My friend went away to tanzinia this summer to help aids orphans as a part of this non profit group.
She was only gone for six weeks.

So I think you can look around and maybe find another of volunteering that isn't the peace corp that doesn't have such a time commitment.

My friend was always a very kind giving person, but she felt the trip really changed her, and she loved doing it. I would do it as soon as possible while you're still young, and not involved with a career or very serious job.

So i guess what I'm saying is, if it makes you happy and your helping others, totally go for it. And there are probably ways you can travel to other countries and help without the huge time commitment the peace corp takes up. Because your concerns about being away so long are very valid.

p.s. she got malaria but is okay now. because apparently there is no vaccines for malaria.
