In my early teen years I was madly in love with Brad Renfro. He was a really good actor and absolutely delicious around 13 - 15.
He became involved with heavy drugs (namely coke) at a pretty young age and fought through it for like 10 years. I was pretty sad when I heard the news. But when Ryan told me he died, I said, "Od?" and he said, "yep." I doubt it came as much of a surprise to anyone.
Sad, sad, sad.
The Juno soundtrack is amazing and Christian Bale is the most tastiest man in all of the universe.
Whenever Dave tells me "Hey, *celebrity who was young* died." I always ask, "Suicide or OD?" It seems like a large percentage of the time it's one of those two things.
I don't like Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader, per sé, but it is enjoyable in small doses. The thing about it is that the title is disingenuous. Of course an adult is smarter than a fifth grader; what makes the show difficult is that the adult is having to recall knowledge that a fifth grader recently learned. What makes the show interesting, at least to me, is seeing what people remember and what they don't and being like "Oh jeez, he should have known that" or "Good Lord, they didn't teach me that when I was in school!" Also, Jeff Foxworthy is the world's worst at busting out the cliffhanger right before the commercials.
I thought the Juno soundtrack was serviceable in the movie, but fairly bland outside of that context. I agree however that everything Belle & Sebastian has ever put out is pure gold.
I can guarantee you if I was bored I could probably watch that show and be entertained, despite what I said.
The other funny thing about it is, if most people don't remember things they learned in 5th grade, how necessary was it to have learned those things? Chances are if you don't remember those things, it's because you have never had to use that knowledge.
I call those kinds of facts "Jeopardy knowledge" - the kind of stuff I just file away and think, "That'll come in handy if I ever go on Jeopardy someday." For some people, that stuff just evaporates over time, but a few people hang onto that knowledge like pack rats, and they are the type of people who dominate game shows (Ken Jennings obviously being the king of them).
