I tend to agree with what you are saying. The only defense I could come up with is that those who joined the military had a choice to do so. One doesn't join the Army with the idea that they may never be asked to fight. Although, I see alot of service members bitching that they "only joined for the benefits and GI Bill and didnt ever expect....". That is a breach of contract in my eyes and also cowardice. Basically they are saying that they wanted all the benefits of being a soldier without the bother of upholding thier end of the bargin.

Stem cells from embryos never had a choice as to if they would be used in research etc.

Again, I dont agree with any of the above ideas. I just present them as a possible counter that will be used by the administration.

I agree that one shouldn't sign up for military service if you aren't ready to go to war...but I have also had personal experience with a recruiter who told me that most people go through their service without ever seeing combat. The GI Bill is their biggest recruiting tool and most of the people who enlist tend to be less than geniuses and/or seriously hard up for a chance in life. So I can understand the frustration.

My point, however, was less toward the soldiers' decision than it was toward Bush's reasoning skills. Whether or not the soldiers have a decision (and they don't, even if they disagree with the necessity or rightness of a war), Bush does have the decision whether or not to sacrifice those lives and sacrifice he did. HE made that decision...not the soldiers. HE feels that it is acceptable to put them in harm's way in order to (and this is up for debate) keep America safe. So, in essence, someone is making that decision for them and not asking or needing their consent. Not much of a difference.

Well, I guess a man who hid from his military obligations, by fucking around in the Texas National Guard would probably have little concept of what actual soldiers go through. I am sure he also could care less about all the widows and all the kids who get to grow up with a picture and a folded flag on the mantle for a parent. Someone should sit him down and make him watch the home made videos on youtube that come out of Iraq ( ... )
