It does help. There is no opera in existence which depends more on its libretto. Sorry, but at least try and get a multilingual text and follow it that way.

This is my first Verdi, so would I be right in assuming it isn't the ideal introduction (for an uncouth American as myself)?

I've read from many writers that it is his finest work, and one even noted that some critics treat Verdi's corpus as a mere prologue to it.
