Were you not living at home for awhile? Living at school is really worth it if you can swing it. (I had to be a RA to pull it off...)
As for books: It's not fantasy (urban or otherwise) but Patient Zero was outstanding. World War Z by Max Brooks (son of Mel Brooks) is so eerily good it will give you shivers at times.
For somewhat post-apocalyptic jaw-droppingly good reads, I recommend "Dies the Fire" by S.M. Stirling. I'd loan you mine, but you'd have to promise to give it back. ;)
