Why is Sex Taboo?

In response to my friend Inara's question, "Why do you think sex generates so much anger and fear among mainstream folk?" I had this reflection and response:

Sex is scary. It's unpredictable, vulnerable, and primal. Society makes rules to maintain at least an illusion of stability, and sexuality is too powerful a force to ever truly be reliable ( Read more... )

interesting point of view.

Though, killing someone can also be the most impersonal thing you can do. I can attest to this first hand.

I would add that since sex is directly tied to procreation, many of the taboos center around knowing and controlling who is bearing children with whom. After all, if you can make sure a woman is only having sex within marriage to a single man, it's a lot easier to determine that any children she bears were fathered by that one man.
