Mt. Rogers/Grayson Highlands State Park

Last Sunday I took Blue Ridge Boris for his third backpack up to Mt. Rogers, and Mountain Molly for her first. The trailhead starts at Massie Gap in Grayson Highlands State Park and we camped just short of Mt. Rogers proper on Wilburn Ridge. The views are amazing, especially at sunset and sunrise. Grayson Highlands State Park in Virginia, just north of Sparta, NC. About 4 hours from Durham, but just about my favorite hike around here.

There are nice hikes around Eno River, in the Uwharries, and even in Umstead, but the really pretty stuff is going to be up in the mountains, in my opinion. It's cooler up there, too. My favorite books on hiking trails are by Allen DeHart.
