Sushi in Davis?

Ok, I'm not the world's biggest sushi fan. I can eat it, but I generally won't pay for it. I realize that makes me an oddity, both in the tech field and amongst my peer group - so I'm putting a shout out here for Davisites ( Read more... )

I don't eat sushi, but I love tempura. Actually, I love most Japanese food, just not the raw fish part (which is a very small subset, on the whole).

I did say that I didn't like sushi, but since I'd already ditched Thai and she'd already ditched Indian I figured we could both eat at a Japanese restaurant.

There's always udon. :) I seem to remember that Moshi Moshi and Osaka have somewhat more extensive non-sushi offerings than Zen Toro if that's what you're aiming for. Or..just hit the Noodle House, 'cause they're awesome.

Jusco, mentioned above is inexpensive. Their raw sushi is on the 'you get what you pay for' side, I'm told (don't eat raw fish myself). but I've been fine with their cooked stuff.

I like Moshi Moshi's veggie tempura. The shrimp tempura is not as great--it's the "four inch shrimp-tail" sort which I swear looks nature-impossible, but I don't know how one would concoct it in a factory.

Veggie Tempura for the win. They've got some interesting vegetarian rolls, too.

I'm indifferent towards sushi, and usually order teriyaki when all my friends want sushi. :-D Most of what I've had has been at Sushi Nobu (in the complex next door to my old place), and I liked it well enough. Adam really loves Osaka Sushi best of all (and their teriyaki is superior to Nobu's)... but I don't know if he's tried Zen Toro. We might have to try that on our next actual date night, whenever that may be.

Osaka has both sushi and regular Japanese food and is usually quiet.

I don't know too many different sushi places in Davis, but my favoritest sushi place in the world is Fuji Chef sushi on G Street in Davis, across from the train station, down the block from Tibet Nepal. All you can eat sushi for about $10. Not just crap like you'd expect from an all you can eat place. All their stuff is excellent and there's a huge variety - basic fish, spider rolls, jellyfish if you're into that, wacky rolls, basic rolls, yakitori, tempura, etc. There's a bar with sushi boats floating around where you can just grab what you like as it comes by, or you can special order pretty much anything.

They open at 11:30 and the line starts forming around 11:10. Even if you don't go with the chief this time, you should truly give this place a try.

Mmmm... Sushi... I think I may take a trip down there soon.
