Hi everybody,

Time for our Vintage Invasion party on Friday, woo hoo!  Jenny Jo that
would be totally great for you to come, we've missed you.  I've had a
few questions about the dance lately so here are the answers for
everyone's perusal:

Q: What do people wear?
A: Whatever you like, it's mostly casual,
there's no dress code, though some of us may play with our outfits just because we like to.

Q: Are there single people?
A: Of course.  Single people seem to have
more time to get out and do things than married people.  Anyway, even
those who are dating someone, dance with everyone, so you'll have no
lack of partners

Q: What kind of music is it?  A: That's a harder one.  If you're asking
what dances, well it's about 2/3 waltzes and other partner dances are
sprinkled in.  As for genres of music, I try to include them all, but
it will vary a bit from dance to dance, depending on requests.

Q: Should I bring my two-left-feet boyfriend?
A: Yes, in fact, we havehad people come by who hardly danced at all, yet had plenty of fun
watching, munching, and talking to people.  We will offer to dance with
and teach your boy but we shan't pressure him if he'd rather sit out.

If I can be a good girl (and my computer behaves itself too) I will get
all this onto my web site tonight.  If I don't, well, that's a perk of
being my regulars, that you get the scoop first!

Friday, July 25 = Vintage Invasion, the friendliest dance party ever.
Bring a friend or make one!  :)  Held at the Finnish Brotherhood Hall,
at Chestnut & University (that's your highway exit), Berkeley.  Lessons

at 8, dancing 9-12, potluck munchies, and a fun variety of music.
  $8/$6
affordable too!

Saturday, July 26 = Brassworks plays at FNW.  This is the band you've
heard at the Gaskell ball, though on this occasion it won't only be
Victorian dances, there will also be swing, tango, etc.  At the usual
time/place, LMDC 7pm lessons, 9pm band.  $13 for the evening ($9
students)

Tuesday, July 29 = In our intermediate class tonight we will be
covering
Pivots for waltz.  This means a new rhythm and a lot of spinning, so
wear your good slippery shoes.

Saturday, August 2 = Peers' Impressionist Picnic, at Lincoln Park, 1450

High St, Alameda, about 11:30-4:30.  Last year it was a Jane Austen
picnic, and there was a huge crowd... everyone likes a picnic so people

got to bring their non-dancing boyfriends.  :)  There is some dancing
offered, too, of course; last year they hid the musicians in the rose
bushes and we danced around them on the gravel path.  Admission is free

and recommended dress is late Victorian, in other words blouses with
high necks and long sleeves to protect you from sunburn.

Sunday, August 3 = Biergartenfest sponsored by the Oakland Naturfreunde

(Nature Friends or Tourist Club).  Held from 1-6pm at their clubhouse,
3115 Butters Drive in Oakland.  Dancing on an outdoor floor,
performances by folkdancers, German food and beer for sale.  $10
admission.  For more info (510) 531-2930.

Tuesday, August 5 =  Tonight we will give you Waltzing in Corners: what

moves work to turn a corner, what moves don't; decorative things to do
when you feel you get "stuck" in the corner and are waiting your turn
to
get back into the flow of dancers.

Friday, August 8 = This is the second Friday so would have been our
dance in Davis-- but we're taking the summer off since it seems
everyone
has left town.  We'll resume when the student population returns to the

university in the fall.

Saturday, August 9 =  Friday Night Waltz dance at LMDC.  Anna Botelho
gives lessons 7-9, DJ dance 9-12, casual dress.  $12 for lessons and
dancing, $8 after 9.

Tuesday, August 12 =  Our intermediate class will feature Waltzing in
5/4.  This is another version of pivots so it should reinforce what you

learned a couple weeks ago, besides opening up a new meter of music for

your dancing pleasure :)

Saturday, August 16 = The Gaskell Victorian Ball.  A time to play
dress-up and live in the fairytale of centuries-old courtship rituals.

Held at the Scottish Rite Temple on Lakeside Drive in Oakland.  The
Brassworks plays from 8:30-12, but you may want to get there at 7:30 to

mingle in the dance lesson or to have time to get yourself (and your
friends) dressed.  Formal wear is required (full length dresses on
women, some version of a tuxedo coat-and-tie for men... a chance to
re-wear something from a prom or wedding) and you'll feel prettier if
you go in Victorian costume as many of us do.
